Rockenfeller pakt winst in tweede race Moscow Raceway

Audi-coureur Mike Rockenfeller heeft de tweede race van het DTM-weekend op de Moscow Raceway gewonnen. Rockenfeller startte de race van pole-position en reed gecontroleerd naar de overwinning. Voor Rockenfeller was het de eerste overwinning sinds 2013 toen hij de race op de Moscow Raceway ook won. Ook stond Rockenfeller dit jaar nog niet eerder op het podium.

Het spannendste moment voor Rockenfeller in de race was de start. Bruno Spengler kende een bliksemstart en ging zij en zij met Rockenfeller door de eerste bocht. Rockenfeller hield stand en verdween aan de horizon. Spengler kreeg het vervolgens aan de stok met Maxime Martin en Jamie Green. Beide probeerden Spengler te verschalken in de openingsronde, maar kwamen er niet voorbij.

Het gevecht van Spengler, Martin en Green zorgde ervoor dat Rockenfeller eenvoudig kon wegrijden van het veld. Met nog twintig minuten te gaan was het Jamie Green die als eerste de pits in kwam voor vers rubber. De stop van Green verliep niet goed en Maxime Martin wist Green een ronde later via zijn pitstop in te halen. Ook Mattias Ekstrom ging voorbij aan Green.

Spengler maakte kort na Martin en Green zijn stop en bleef het duo voor, terwijl Rockenfeller langer doorreed op zijn oudere banden. Ondanks het voordeel van nieuwere banden wist Spengler niet voorbij Rockenfeller te komen nadat die zijn pitstop had pitstop had gemaakt.

Tot overmaat van ramp zat Spengler ook nog vast achter Mercedes-coureur Lucas Auer die erg lang doorreed op oudere banden. Auer zorgde voor een prima buffer voor Rockenfeller. Het lukte Spengler om Auer te verschalken, maar hij had inmiddels al meer dan vier seconden verloren op Rockenfeller. Maxime Martin leek op weg naar het podium, maar werd nog ingehaald door Mattias Ekstrom die daarmee de derde plaats pakte.

Martin werd uiteindelijk vierde, voor Green, Paffett en Wittmann. Mortara, Muller en Pascal Wehrlein waren de overige rijders die punten scoorden. Wehrlein pakte in de eerste race de leiding van het kampioenschap terug van Ekstrom, maar door het podium van Ekstrom en de matige tweede race van Wehrlein is Ekstrom weer de leider in het kampioenschap. Ekstrom heeft nu zes punten voorsprong op Mercedes-coureur Wehrlein.

De volgende races in het DTM kampioenschap zijn over twee weken op Oschersleben.
