Bruno Spengler verslaat Ekström voor pole in Hockenheim

Bruno Spengler heeft zich zojuist verzekerd van de pole position in Hockenheim. De Canadees reed in het vierde kwalificatiedeel een 1:34.270 en was daarmee ruim een tiende sneller dan Mattias Ekstrom. Ralf Schumacher eindigde keurig als derde, gevolgd door Timo Scheider.

De eerste kwalificatie van het 2011-seizoen kende een rommelig begin. Gary Paffett kende waarschijnlijk problemen met zijn remmen en zette zijn Mercedes in het grind neer in het stadion-gedeelte. De rode vlag werd uitgehangen en er werd besloten dat alle overige coureurs deel mochten nemen aan Q2, dit om tijd terug te winnen. Daar moesten dan wel negen coureurs afvallen, want alleen de beste acht gaan door naar het derde deel.

Er barstte in Q2 een hevige strijd los om die felbegeerde achtste positie. Ook Renger van der Zande kon zich in die strijd mengen. Hij was lange tijd in gevecht met Christian Vietoris en Edoardo Mortara voor een plaats in het derde deel. De Nederlander eindigde uiteindelijk als elfde, vlak achter Mortara en Vietoris. Oliver Jarvis kwalificeerde zich als twaalfde, gevolgd door David Coulthard, Jamie Green, Filipe Albuquerque, Susie Stoddart en Rahal Frey.

In het derde kwalificatiedeel was het vooral Miguel Molina die teleurstelde. De Spanjaard kwam niet in de buurt van de tijden vooraan en eindigde als achtste op negen tienden achterstand van de nummer zeven, Maro Engel. Ook Martin Tomczyk haalde de shoot-out voor de snelste vier rijders niet en Mike Rockenfeller kwam slechts twee duizendsten tekort op de vierde stek.

In die top vier was het uiteindelijk Bruno Spengler die de snelste coureur was. De Canadees, die vorig jaar lang mee kon strijden om de titel, was met zijn 1:34.270 bijna twee tienden sneller dan Mattias Ekstrom. Ralf Schumacher eindigde knap als derde en bleef Timo Scheider voor. De voormalige kampioen maakte een fout in Q4 en was daardoor kansloos voor de pole.
