Afgebroken voorvleugel oorzaak incident Alonso en Hamilton

Bij McLaren denken ze de oorzaak voor de touché tussen Lewis Hamilton en Renault-rijder Fernando Alonso te hebben achterhaald. De voorvleugel zou al voordat Hamilton zich bijna over het achterwiel van zijn voorligger lanceerde afgebroken zijn, wat voor minder luchtweerstand en dus meer snelheid zorgde. Bij McLaren wijst niemand met een verwijtende vinger naar voormalig werknemer Alonso.

McLaren-directeur Martin Whitmarsh: In het begin wisten we niet hoe dit kon gebeuren. Allerlei vragen spoken door je hoofd zoals: heeft Alonso hem een brake-test gegeven? Maar toen ik de details bestudeerde ontdekte ik dat het bovenste deel van de voorvleugel van Hamilton twee seconden voor het incident afbrak. Daardoor verloor hij wat downforce en ging opeens sneller.

We weten nog niet hoe het komt dat de voorvleugel niet intact bleef, maar we vermoeden dat het onderdeel bij een eerder contact is beschadigd. Het zou ook uit zichzelf afgebroken kunnen zijn, maar dat is nooit eerder voorgekomen en daarom denken we aan contactschade. Er bestaat geen enkel bewijs en we hebben geen reden om Alonso ergens van te verdenken.

Hamilton had sowieso een slecht weekend, op deze manier in stijl afgerond. Whitmarsh: Hij was zeer teleurgesteld in zichzelf, maar hij is mentaal erg sterk en hij zal hierdoor niks aan zelfvertrouwen inboeten. Vrijdag en zondag waren mindere dagen voor hem, maar hij gelooft in zichzelf. Hij zal zich herpakken en in Spanje verschijnt hij sterker aan de start.
