Alonso neemt alle schuld op zich voor botsing met Heidfeld

Renault-coureur Fernando Alonso heeft de volle verantwoordelijkheid voor de botsing met BMW Sauber-rijder Nick Heidfeld op zich genomen. De Spanjaard was iets te enthousiast in zijn poging om de Duitser in de langzame Loews-hairpin in te halen. Heidfeld hield daaraan een lekke achterband over. Alonso keerde met een kapotte voorvleugel terug in de pitstraat.

Het begin ging vrij goed, totdat ik in ronde zeven voor het Casino de vangrail in aquaplaneerde, begint de tweevoudig wereldkampioen. In dezelfde ronde kwam de safety car voor het eerst de baan op. De baan was heel nat en daarom besloot ik de volwaardige regenbanden te monteren. Vanaf dat moment stopte het met regenen en droogde de baan langzaam maar zeker op.

Wij hadden meer neerslag verwacht. Het gevolg was dat we teveel tijd verloren en dat zorgde voor een wanhoopspoging om Heidfeld in te halen. Ik probeerde hem in te halen op een plek waar dat niet kan. In Monaco kan je nergens inhalen en daar dus ook niet. Het was volledig mijn fout. Daarna hadden we een wonder nodig om een goed resultaat te halen.
