Alonso: "Ik wil Renault naar vierde plaats brengen"

Voormalig tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 Fernando Alonso wil zijn renstal de vierde plaats bezorgen in het constructeurkampioenschap. Alonso put dan ook motivatie uit het feit dat Toyota op de Renaults voorstaat met tien punten. Alonso zelf scoorde er achttien en teamgenoot Piquet Jr. deed met 13 punten een duit in het zakje. Alonso wil scoren om Toyota te achterhalen en Red Bull Racing achter zich te houden.

Fernando Alonso: "Onze doelen zijn veranderd, zeker gezien voorafgaand aan dit jaar. Natuurlijk wil je vechten om het kampioenschap maar gaandeweg het seizoen kom je erachter dat dit geen realistische optie is. Dat verander je je plan."

"Mijn doel is om Renault de vierde plaats in het constructeurkampioenschap te krijgen. Mijn doel vanaf nu tot aan het einde van het seizoen is dus om Toyota te verslaan en de vierde plaats in te nemen als team. Het maakt niet uit of we vijfde of zesde eindigen, of elfde of twaalfde. Als we maar voor hen eindigen", aldus een strijdvaardige Alonso. De Renault-coureur sluit zijn betoog af met: "Dit is onze nieuwe motivatie. We zijn heel gefocust op het behalen van deze doelstelling."

Het weekend in Spa-Francorchamps begon goed voor Alonso, waar hij de tijdentabel topte in de tweede vrije training. In de derde vrije training eindigde Alonso als derde, terwijl de eerste Toyota pas terug te vinden is op plaats twaalf.
