Mechanische pech laat moedeloze Alonso kansloos

Het leek er nog zo mooi uit te zien voor Fernando Alonso. Tijdens de vrije trainingen liet de Spanjaard zien in bloedvorm te verkeren. Met zijn middelmatige Renault maakte hij het de concurrentie behoorlijk lastig. Tijdens de kwalificatie zorgde een kapotte brandstofpomp voor een vroegtijdige aftocht. Morgen zal hij vanaf een schamele vijftiende plaats starten. Een goed resultaat is nu onmogelijk.

Volgens de tweevoudig wereldkampioen is de Renault het hele seizoen nog nergens zo snel geweest als op het stratencircuit van Singapore. Tijdens de eerste kwalificatiesessie deed ik het rustig aan, maar eindigde ik zelfs als zesde. Pole position was vandaag waarschijnlijk iets teveel van het goede, maar een tweede of derde plek zat er zeker in, zegt de Spanjaard, die na zijn uitvalbeurt een uitermate gefrustreerde indruk maakte en zijn handen ten hemel hief.

De race is verloren, zegt Alonso. Er moeten wonderen gebeuren wil ik vanaf plek vijftien nog kans hebben op WK-punten. Er moeten tien of twaalf mensen uitvallen en de Safety Car moet ons helpen, maar dat lijkt een sprookje. We moeten gewoon zorgen dat we beter presteren, zeker op banen zoals deze waar je niet in kunt halen. Dit is heel erg jammer.
