Trulli hoopte op een podiumfinish in thuisrace voor Toyota

Jarno Trulli had maar al te graag zijn Toyota-bolide naar de eerste, tweede of derde plaats gereden. Het bleek niet mogelijk voor de Italiaan, de Ferrari, McLaren, BMW en Renaults leken op zondag sneller af finishte niet iedereen voor de Toyota-coureur. Door het terugvallen van Hamilton en Massa en het uitvallen van Kovalainen lagen er kansen voor Trulli. Echter waren Alonso, Kubica, Raikkonen en ook Piquet Jr. te snel voor Trulli. De Italiaan eindigde de race als vijfde.

De Fuji Speedway is eigendom van het team van Toyota en daarom was de druk wellicht wat groter voor Trulli, die toch een prima prestatie neerzette. Trulli: "We moeten blij zijn met vandaag. Maar ik had graag het team en alle aanwezige Japanse fans wat meer willen geven. Helaas, dat lukte niet. Ik had heel graag op het podium gestaan vandaag, echter is een vijfde plaats op zich ook prima. Vanaf de start heb ik alles gegeven, maar helaas zat er niet meer in."

Jarno Trulli denkt dat de kou roet in het eten gooide voor het Japanse team: "Het hele weekend al staan we er goed bij, met soms zelfs de aller-snelste tijd. Maar hier in de race waren we niet zo snel. Ik denk dat het door de lage temperaturen kwam. Het betekende dat de auto wat meer in onbalans reed. Ik probeerde nog om Piquet Jr. in de slotfase achter mij te houden, maar zij waren veel te snel vandaag."

Renault is voor Toyota een zeer sterke concurrent geworden in de strijd om de vierde plaats in de constructeurtitel. De Fransen hebben het voordeel, liefst zestien punten heeft Renault er meer gescoord dan Toyota. Aangezien Glock niet finishte is dat verschil sinds de vorige race alleen maar groter geworden.
