Fernando Alonso nam met verbazing kennis van de berichten dat Honda uit de Formule 1 stapte. De Spanjaard stond lange tijd in de belangstelling van de Japanse renstal, maar hij koos voor een langer verblijf bij Renault.

Daar staat hij nog altijd achter, en niet alleen omdat Honda is verdwenen. De waarheid is dat ik me goed voel bij Renault, en niet omdat Honda is weggevallen, zegt Alonso in de Spaanse krant Marca. Ik moet zeggen dat een overstap naar Honda voor mij nooit een serieuze optie was.
