Luca Badoer stond in 1999 voor het laatst aan de start van een Grand Prix. In Valencia keert hij terug als racecoureur voor Ferrari. Het wordt de ervaren testrijder gegund, maar de buitenwereld had na het afzeggen van Michael Schumacher liever een jong talent gezien.

Zo ook oud Formule 1-rijder Alex Zanardi. In Gazzetta dello Sport zegt de Italiaan: Michael nam de beslissing om in te stappen voor Massa met zijn hart en niet met zijn hoofd. Hij heeft enorm veel talent, maar de zonsondergang voor zijn raceloopbaan is al geweest. Een jonge coureur uit de GP2 nu de kans geven was veel logischer geweest.
