Perez heeft medelijden met teleurgestelde toeschouwers

Force India-coureur Sergio Perez snapt wel dat een aantal fans gisteren tijdens de tweede vrije training begon te fluiten nadat er een half uur lang helemaal niets gebeurde. De baan in Monaco was flink nat na een hevige regenbui voor aanvang en afgezien van een enkele installatieronde was er in de eerste drie kwartier totaal geen actie. Tot onvrede van de aanwezige toeschouwers.

Perez kan daar wel begrip voor opbrengen. Aan Autosport liet hij weten: "Ik zou ook teleurgesteld zijn als ik op de tribune zat, dat is normaal. Maar wij moeten aan de lange termijn denken. De teams hebben andere zorgen, daar zijn de fans de dupe van. We zijn beperkt in onze onderdelen en willen geen schade rijden. Ik heb medelijden met de toeschouwers, maar we compenseren dat zondag hopelijk met een goede show."

Teamgenoot Nico Hulkenberg voegt toe: "Ja, het is jammer voor de toeschouwers, maar dit is de Formule 1. Onder dit soort omstandigheden moet je teams echt dwingen om naar buiten te gaan of je bedenkt een regel die ons verplicht om wat te rijden. Als wij denken dat er geen winst te behalen valt, dan gaan we niet de baan op."
