Mercedes-reserve Wehrlein niet vervolgd voor ongeluk

Pascal Wehrlein beleeft een enerverend jaar. Hij debuteerde in de DTM, won op de Lausitzring voor het eerst een DTM-race en vertolkte op de achtergrond een belangrijke rol bij het Formule 1-team van Mercedes. Hij bracht vele uren door in de simulator en de beloning was een benoeming tot officiële reserverijder. Maar het was niet allemaal rozengeur en maneschijn.

In mei vloog Wehrlein tijdens een promotioneel evenement van Mercedes bij het trainingskamp van de Duitse nationale voetbalploeg van de weg. Daarbij raakten twee mensen gewond, waarvan één zo ernstig dat hij pas eind juli uit een coma ontwaakte, meldt het Duitse Sport1. Volgens Dietmar Kohl, manager van Wehrlein, is het gevaar voor juridische vervolging echter geweken.

"Pascal onderhoudt nauw contact met het slachtoffer en diens vrouw. Samen zijn we bij hem op bezoek geweest in het ziekenhuis. Pascal is heel professioneel met dit incident en de nasleep omgesprongen", aldus Kohl. Openbare aanklager Guido Rispoli verklaarde aan Focus dat het onderzoek naar deze zaak waarschijnlijk spoedig wordt gesloten.
