Productieve en probleemloze testdag voor Max Verstappen

Met ruim 70 probleemloze ronden op de 4.326 meter lange Red Bull Ring heeft Max Verstappen woensdag meer dan een Grand Prix-afstand afgelegd. De 16-jarige Red Bull Junior deed dat in een Formule Renault 3.5-auto, die zich op de autosportladder tussen de Formule 3 en Formule 1 bevindt en ingezet wordt in de World Series by Renault.

"Ik heb minstens 300 km gereden op de Red Bull Ring", doet Max uit de doeken. "Het ging prima, de snelheid zat er goed in. Omdat ik al een keer eerder in deze Formule Renault 3.5-auto had gereden, kon ik al snel voluit gaan en de limiet opzoeken. De hele dag is probleemloos verlopen. Ik ben op de baan gebleven en heb dus veel ronden kunnen rijden. Dat is het belangrijkste.”

Oefening baart kunst, zo luidt het gezegde en de test diende dan ook als training ter voorbereiding op het aanstaande Formule 1-debuut van Max. "Een FR3.5-auto heeft carbon remschijven net als een F1-wagen, dus daar heb ik aan kunnen wennen. Ondanks dat ik veel heb gereden, heb ik geen last van mijn armen of nek."

Max was niet de enige die op het Oostenrijkse circuit rondging, maar hinder had hij niet van de vijf aanwezige F3-auto's. Max besluit: "Ik heb veel lange runs gedaan, omdat het op de Red Bull Ring een tijdje duurt voor je echt op snelheid komt. De eerste paar rondjes heb je weinig grip en daarna kun je steeds harder gaan. Ik ben tevreden hoe de test is verlopen. Het was een goede training."
