Permane: "Maldonado uitstekende coureur om mee te werken"

Pastor Maldonado is niet de coureur met het beste imago in de Formule 1-paddock. De Venezolaan blonk, vooral in zijn eerste seizoenen, vooral uit door domme acties en crashes, maar heeft het vertrouwen van Lotus inmiddels gewonnen. Volgens Alan Permane is Maldonado zelfs één van de beste coureurs waarmee hij ooit heeft gewerkt.

Permane, baas van de Trackside Operations bij Lotus, vertelde: "Pastor heeft een behoorlijk slecht imago naar de buitenwereld toe en natuurlijk doet hij zo nu en dan wat domme dingen. Desalniettemin is hij één van de beste coureurs waarmee ik ooit heb gewerkt. Hij blijft altijd kalm, het lijkt wel alsof niks hem kan frustreren."

Lotus verschijnt met Maldonado en Romain Grosjean komend seizoen met een ongewijzigde line-up aan de start van het seizoen. Hoewel Grosjean dit jaar zijn frustraties over de slechte prestaties niet onder stoelen of banken schoof, liet Maldonado nooit een onvertogen woord horen.

"Pastor raakt sowieso niet snel gefrustreerd", begon Permane. "Het is geen geheim dat Romain dat afgelopen seizoen wel was. Hij wil slagen, races en titels winnen. Romain reed een geweldig tweede deel van het seizoen in 2013 en was de enige coureur die serieus weerstand kon bieden aan Red Bull."

"Pastor springt misschien wat beter om met problemen. Niet dat zijn honger of vastberadenheid naar succes minder is, hij uit zich gewoon op een andere manier."

  "Belachelijke" moet natuurlijk terechte zijn. Pastor verkloot het voor zichzelf met domme beslissingen en domme fouten. Hij ging ook met veel heibel bij Williams weg dus zo'n teamplayer lijkt het me niet. Hij heeft potentieel maar haalt het er steeds niet uit. En dat is zijn eigen dikke schuld.
