McLaren had op meer gehoopt dan afvallen in Q1

Jenson Button en Fernando Alonso zijn er ook in China niet in geslaagd door te dringen tot het tweede kwalificatiedeel. Het duo oogde tijdens de trainingen nog redelijk competitief, maar tijdens de kwalificatie bleek de Honda-aangedreven McLaren toch een maatje te licht.

"Ik denk dat we hoopte wat dichter bij de concurrentie te staan vandaag", aldus Button, die zich als zeventiende wist te kwalificeren. "In de trainingen leken we competitiever. We hebben een redelijk goede balans gevonden met de auto, maar de rondetijden komen er nog niet echt uit."

"Daarnaast lijken de auto's voor ons een grote sprong te hebben gemaakt voor de kwalificatie, terwijl wij dat niet hebben. Al met al hebben we ons wat verbeterd dit weekend, maar in de kwalificatie ging het gewoon niet zo goed. Hopelijk gaat het morgen beter en kunnen we strijden met de auto's voor ons op de grid."

Teamgenoot Fernando start een plekje achter zijn teamgenoot op de achttiende plek. Ook de Spanjaard had op meer gehoopt. "We waren twee tienden verwijderd van het middenveld en erg dicht bij Q2", aldus Alonso. We komen er wel, stap voor stap, maar we zijn nog altijd te langzaam en moeten ons verbeteren."

"Onze hoofdprioriteit morgen is finishen. Dat biedt ons de mogelijkheid om meer te leren over de auto en zo kunnen we eventuele problemen blootleggen. De twee uitvalbeurten in Maleisie waren uiteraard niet ideaal voor ons, dus we moeten proberen te finishen hier in China. Het is vooralsnog wederom een positief weekend. Iedereen in het team is opgewonden over de gemaakte progressie."

Hoedje af voor Button, toont dat hij nog bij het selecte groepje hoort. Toch een goede beslissing om Magnussen op de reservebank te zetten. Vond trouwens aan de onboard calera te zien dat de Mclaren heel venijnig kan zijn bij het uitkomen van bochten...ook alrijden ze niet met Full Power. Nog veel werk aan de winkel daar...
