Leimer: "Misschien later dit jaar racen bij Manor"

Fabio Leimer maakt mogelijk later dit seizoen zijn debuut in de Formule 1. Die geruchten circuleren al sinds hij door Manor aangesteld is als test- en reserverijder. De Zwitser, GP2-kampioen van 2013, zaagt aan de stoelpoten van racecoureur Roberto Merhi.

Aan ESPN F1 liet Leimer weten: "We stonden sinds 2013 al in contact met Marussia, maar we konden nooit het benodigde budget bijeen brengen. Daarmee spatte mijn Formule 1-droom uiteen, het was over. Totdat ik dit jaar een belletje kreeg dat ze me als derde rijder wilden hebben en misschien later dit seizoen nog wat races wilden laten doen. Daar hoefde ik niet lang over na te denken, ik heb gelijk ja gezegd. Ik ben hier blij mee, het helpt me enorm."

"Dus ja, ik hoop aan het einde van deze jaargang nog wat races voor mijn rekening te nemen. Silverstone wordt waarschijnlijk mijn eerste vrije training namens Manor. In de Formule 1 kan alles snel veranderen, als iemand met een grote zak met geld voorbij komt kunnen mijn kansen zo weer keren. Maar op dit moment is de situatie zo dat ik op Silverstone een vrijdagtraining doe en later mogelijk wat races."
