McLaren eerlijk naar rijders toe over de situatie

Het team van McLaren is naar coureurs Fernando Alonso en Jenson Button volkomen eerlijk over de situatie van de Britse renstal. Dat beweerde directeur Jonathan Neale in gesprek met ESPN F1. De hereniging tussen McLaren en Honda is nog niet het doorslaande succes dat beide partijen ervan gehoopt hadden, maar ze werken hard om op korte termijn terug te keren aan de top.

Daarbij licht het team de rijders overal over in. Neale: "In elke samenwerking is er veel gaande, zeker wanneer je onder druk staat en je presteert op het circuit niet hetgeen je zou willen. De enige manier om daar mee om te gaan is door transparant te zijn en de problemen af te handelen zodra ze zich aandienen. Zo zijn we ook naar ons rijdersduo toe. De tijd dat we een hand op hun schouder kunnen leggen en kunnen vragen om vertrouwen is voorbij."

"Helemaal met Fernando en Jenson, twee slimme individuen die daar meteen doorheen kijken. Ze weten heel goed wat ze doen, ze kennen deze wereld van haver tot gort en het heeft geen zin om ze voor de gek te houden. Ze geloven wat ze zien en blijven bij je zolang je resultaten boekt. Dat we het gat naar de kop terug gebracht hebben van vijf naar twee seconden geeft ze vertrouwen om te geloven in wat we de komende races introduceren."

    Dat moet ik Button en Alonso wel nageven. Ze weten dat dit een bijzonder moeilijk jaar is en toch zijn ze er vrij relaxed onder, ondanks dat het twee groot coureurs zijn die voor minimaal een podium willen gaan.

    Toch merk je meestal niet echt dat ze gefrustreerd zijn (misschien zijn ze dat ook wel niet, omdat ze weten hoe de situatie in elkaar steekt). Als Alonso en Button (en de rest van het team natuurlijk) de auto weer winnend kunnen krijgen dan is dat een prestatie van formaat en iets waar ze misschien wel net zoveel respect voor verdienen als nog een extra titel.

    Ik ben niet echt fan van McLaren of Honda of Button of Alonso, maar ben érg benieuwd hoever ze het gaan schoppen de komende seizoenen.

      Met een salaris van vele miljoenen zou ik ook relaxed reageren als mijn werkgever eens een wat minder jaar meemaakt.

      Die jongens doen het al lang niet meer voor het geld. Dit zijn topsporters, die willen winnen en niets anders.
      Sterker nog, ik denk dat als Button of Alonso (en menig ander coureur) de keuze hadden om een paar jaar zonder salaris te rijden en vervolgens nog minimaal een wereldtitel te pakken dat ze het zouden doen.

      @richardt...paar jaar zonder salaris met wereldtitel als resultaat is een no brainer...als Alonso niet betaald zo krijgen in deze omstandigheden, dan had hij niet meer in deze roestbak plaats genomen, maar direct op zoek gegaan naar een andere team....

      Gezien zijn reactie in Canada op het verzoek rustiger aan te doen en brandstof te sparen... ik weet het niet. Zou zomaar kunnen dat hij volgend jaar voor het fabrieksteam van Renault kiest.

    Daarom was het ook slim om met deze twee mannen door te gaan. Ik hoorde dat Honda na de zomerstop een aantal updates gaat introduceren(alle 7 tokens gebruiken). Dit eerste half jaar is een fiasco maar te begrijpen als je de winter zag.
