FIA bevestigt een vrije motorwissel voor Honda

McLaren-Honda hoeft bij de volgende motorwissel van Fernando Alonso en Jenson Button geen grid penalty in te lossen. De internationale autosportbond FIA verleent het duo van de Britse renstal dispensatie vanwege een bepaling dat nieuwe motorleveranciers een extra motor in mogen zetten.

Voor Honda gold die regel met terugwerkende kracht, waardoor ze dit jaar vijf motoren mochten verbruiken. Alonso en Button zijn echter al bij hun vijfde krachtbron aanbeland en daarvoor bestraft. Over de oplossing bestond even onduidelijkheid, maar Motorsport.com meldt dat de FIA heeft besloten dat de volgende motorwissel van de McLaren-coureurs niet strafbaar is.

Met die duidelijkheid op zak kan Honda de strategie voor de rest van het seizoen uitstippelen. De Japanse autofabrikant bewaart de resterende zeven tokens om de aandrijflijn te verbeteren tot na de zomerpauze. Het is dus niet aannemelijk dat ze de gratis motorwissel voor Hongarije al toepassen, maar die beslissing valt aan de vooravond van de vrije trainingen van vrijdag.
