Verstappen mist overgeslagen tussenstop GP2 niet

Max Verstappen heeft een extreem korte route afgelegd van de karting naar de Formule 1. De 17-jarige Nederlander debuteerde dit seizoen namens Scuderia Toro Rosso in de koningsklasse van de autosport na één jaar in de Formule 3. De gebruikelijke weg via tussenstation GP2 was aan hem niet besteed en hij heeft niet het gevoel dat het hem remt in zijn ontwikkeling.

Verstappen verkondigde aan Autosport: "Ik heb in mijn raceloopbaan altijd grote stappen gezet, ook in de karting al. Qua snelheid heb ik een jaar GP2 niet nodig gehad. Misschien dat je alleen een beetje ervaring mist. Voor de kwalificatie draait het bijvoorbeeld om ervaring onder uiteenlopende omstandigheden, ik heb minder op deze circuits gereden dan de rest."

"Dat maakt het soms lastiger voor mij, maar ik heb dit jaar veel geleerd en ik word continu beter. Ik heb nog genoeg ruimte om te verbeteren, voldoende potentie. Ik ben pas 17, de overige coureurs zijn ouder. Ik ben nog jong. Ik maak fouten, maar dat komt omdat ik een rookie ben en mezelf wil bewijzen. Naarmate je ouder wordt, gaat de foutenlast omlaag en raak je meer op je gemak."
