Mercedes: "Minder marge dan een jaar geleden"

Het team van Mercedes vangt de tweede seizoenshelft aan in een riante uitgangspositie. De Duitse renstal vertrok in tien van de tien Grands Prix tot nu toe vanaf pole position en won acht van de tien races. Dat zijn mooie cijfers, maar toch is de concurrentie niet heel ver weg. Zeker niet nadat Mercedes in Hongarije wat steekjes liet vallen.

De regerend wereldkampioen kan het zich dan ook niet veroorloven om te verslappen. Mercedes-motorsportbaas Toto Wolff: "Met tien races achter de rug en nog negen races te gaan, beginnen we aan de tweede seizoenshelft met meer punten dan vorig seizoen rond dit tijdstip. Toch is onze marge naar de concurrentie kleiner dan een jaar geleden."

"We kunnen geen moment onze voet van het gas halen. Hongarije was het bewijs dat als wij iets laten liggen, de competitie er als de kippen bij is om kansen met beide handen aan te grijpen. We hebben de batterijen opgeladen in de zomer, maar zijn ook gefocust op onze taken gebleven. Er is nog genoeg te winnen of te verliezen en we moeten ongenadig zijn in onze push om weer als beste uit de bus te komen."

    Hopelijk het laatste seizoen met dominantie. Volgend seizoen graag weer een 2012'je!

      Ja, dat zou pas spektakel zijn als die drie aan mekaar gewaagd zouden zijn.

    Ik ben benieuwd wanneer Mercedes die tokens in gaat zetten. Ik heb een beetje de indruk dat Mercedes zand in de ogen aan het strooien is. In het belang voor de sport laten ze de concurrentie dichterbij komen. Zodra hun dominantie pas echt in gevaar komt doen ze er waarschijnlijk weer ee schepje bovenop.

      Denk niet zozeer zand in de ogen strooien, maar nadat ze merkten dat ze nog voorsprong zat hadden konden ze hun tokens mooi in de zak houden voor een latere update met meer winst.

      Al heeft Ferrari ook nog 7 tokens over. Net zoveel als Mercedes. Dus het kan ook nog beide kanten op gaan.

      Ik vind het ook een beetje 'overreaction'.
      Ze maken het erger dan het is, natuurlijk om iedereen scherp trachten te houden.

    Als je dan weer de kwalificatieverschillen bekijkt, dan zit Ferrari net verder achter Mercedes dan Red Bull vorig jaar zat. Dus veel is er niet veranderd. Ferrari hun race pace is net wat beter dan die van Red Bull vorig jaar, maar Mercedes is onverslaanbaar in normale omstandigheden.
