Spa tot en met 2018 verzekerd van Grand Prix

De Belgische Grand Prix vindt minstens tot en met 2018 plaats op het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps. Dat verkondigde promotor Andre Maes in La Derniere Heure. "De Waalse regering heeft garanties afgegeven en we hebben het contract met FOM verlengd tot en met 2018."

RTBF meldde eerder al dat voor de race van zondag 54.000 tickets zijn verkocht, meer dan vorig jaar. Maes: "Dat heeft twee oorzaken, denk ik. Ten eerste was er dit jaar geen Duitse Grand Prix en Spa is voor de Duitse fans een aan te reizen alternatief. Daarnaast hebben we een jonge belofte in de persoon van Max Verstappen, die Nederlands is maar ook de Belgische nationaliteit heeft."

Voor Maes zou de promotie van Stoffel Vandoorne naar de Formule 1 het summum zijn. "Hopelijk pakt hij de GP2-titel en met de nieuwe superlicentie-eisen komt hij dan zeker in aanmerking voor een stoeltje in de Formule 1, bij McLaren of ergens anders. Dat zou de kaartverkoop van ons evenement een enorme impuls geven."
