Geslaagd debuut voor Rossi bij Manor Marussia

Alexander Rossi werd halverwege vorige week aangekondigd door het Formule 1-team van Manor Marussia als vervanger van Roberto Merhi tijdens vijf van de zeven resterende races. Hoewel Rossi geen optimale voorbereiding kende, slaagde de Amerikaan er in om zijn Britse teamgenoot Will Stevens in de race te verslaan.

Stevens had nog wel het voortouw op Rossi in de kwalificatie, maar liet in de trainingen al zien niet veel tijd nodig te hebben om te wennen aan zijn nieuwe werkomgeving. Waar de Amerikaan nog wel aan moest wennen, was de startprocedure. Rossi kwam slecht weg bij de start, maar herpakte zich snel. In de eerste ronde wist hij teamgenoot Will Stevens al te verschalken om hem de rest van de race voor te blijven.

"Mijn start was slecht, ik ben nog niet gewend aan de nieuwe startprocedure. Ik kwam snel in mijn ritme na de start en wist Will Stevens al in de eerste ronde te passeren. Tot halverwege de race verliep alles uitstekend, maar toen kreeg ik problemen met de boordradio. Dit speelde me vooral parten tijdens de tweede safety car-periode, ik wist niet dat ik mijn ronde achterstand ongedaan mocht maken. Het was lang wachten en hard werken om mijn debuut in de Formule 1 te kunnen maken, maar vandaag was een fantastische dag. Om je debuut te maken in Singapore is erg bijzonder. Ik ben het team erg dankbaar en kijk uit naar de komende races", aldus Rossi over zijn debuutrace in de Formule 1.

Voor Will Stevens viel er minder te genieten. De Brit kende volgens eigen zeggen zijn beste start van het jaar, maar maakte dat weer ongedaan door later in de eerste ronde een fout te maken. Stevens over zijn race: "Ik probeerde na mijn fout weer aan te haken bij Rossi, maar de bandenslijtage was erg hoog. Erg jammer, want ik vind dit een leuk circuit. Het zat me dit weekend niet echt mee."

Kwam inderdaad vreemd over; heel de wereld, behalve Rossi zelf, wist dat hij zijn ronde achterstand in mocht halen.

  Ja, en daarmee heeft hij het verloop van de race toch beïnvloed. Eigenlijk hadden ze hem voor deze fout een drive throught penalty moeten geven.

Heel goed gedaan door Rossi. Hij kan goed sturen en hij brengt geld mee. Een absolute win win situatie voor Manor en de sport. Al met al heb je best aardige "paydrivers" in de sport. Perez is een podium klant geweest. Rossi is ook een goede coureur. Maldonado is een race winnaar. Of je dat nu leuk vindt of niet.

Paydrivers zijn zeker niet alleen slecht voor de sport. Je hebt ook mensen nodig die de middenmoot en achterhoede teams overeind houden. Ze zijn niet meer van het niveau Alex Young en Tarso Marques. Ze kunnen nu wat meer :)
