'F1-stoeltje zonder sponsor was een wonder'

Roberto Merhi zegt er alles aan te doen om voor 2016 opnieuw een racezitje in de wacht te slepen. De Spanjaard keert dit weekend terug bij Manor omdat Alexander Rossi deelneemt aan het GP2-kampioenschap dit weekend.

Merhi kijkt zelf erg uit naar de wagen van Manor volgend seizoen. Niet alleen zal Mercedes dan de motoren leveren, Williams levert de wielophanging en versnellingsbak aan het team. Merhi: "Wij werken erg hard om voor volgend seizoen een competitief stoeltje te regelen"

Toch kijkt de Spanjaard verder dan alleen zijn huidige werkgever: "Er zijn twee teams momenteel geïnteresseerd voor volgend seizoen. Beide teams zijn erg goed, maar je moet wel sponsoren meebrengen. Maar het goede nieuws is dat ze mij voor de helft van het sponsorgeld willen aannemen dan wat andere rijders mee moeten nemen. Hoewel het zelfs dan nog lastig is zoveel geld bij elkaar te rapen."

Mocht Merhi volgend jaar geen F1-zitje weten te bemachtigen, gaat de huidige Manor-coureur niet als testcoureur aan de slag. "Kansen als Le Mans en Indycar zouden dan interessant zijn."

Merhi is boven alles erg trots op wat hij heeft gepresteerd in 2015: zonder sponsorgeld tóch bijna een heel seizoen racen. "In een team als Manor heb je financiële middelen nodig, anders is het onmogelijk goed te draaien. Wat wij hebben gedaan is redelijk nieuw in de Formule 1. Het is een wonder dat ik hier zolang heb geracet zonder een sponsor achter mij."

      @masf1 frijns zou dit niet eens willen, elke keer achteraan moeten rijden is een topper onwaardig zou jij moeten weten toch.

      Niet zo goed, Giedo zit nog steeds in de ontkenningsfase dat hij F1-coureur af is. Doet zich nu voor als de instructeur van Max Verstappen, die Max de fijne kneepjes van het vak heeft geleerd.

      Zonder dollen, ik hoop dat Giedo nog ergens een mooi racestoeltje weet te versieren, talent zat om nog jaren op top niveau te racen.

      @BRRACING hoe kom je erbij dat Guido in de ontkenningsfase zit? Guido gaf vorige week op, tijdens een interview op Sport 1 tv aan dat er 2 opties zijn: DTM en LMS. Hij is voor dit seizoen gevraagd voor Manor, maar heeft dit afgewezen omdat hij niet achteraan wilt rijden.
      Heel anders dan de dikke duim info die jij hier telkens verspreidt.

    Guido heeft aangegeven in gesprek te zijn met wat teams uit DTM en WEC, maar heeft wel de aanbod afgeslagen van Manor...

    Laat die "achterhoudenteam" nou net volgend jaar gaan rijden met Mercedes motoren en Guido al op gesprek zijn geweest met Toto (wolff) ..

    Elk geval zou Guido mooi kunnen liften op het succes van Max en dus betere sponsorsdeal krijgen aangezien het voor Nederland ineens aantrekkelijker is om 2 Nederlandse drivers te sponsoren.

    Ik had wel verwacht dat Guido een testdriver zou worden van bijvoorbeeld Mercedes of een andere Mercedes powered team.

    Over Merhi: ik heb geen hoge verwachtingen van hem en had liever Frijns gezien in de F1 aangezien ze net zoveel sponsorgelden hebben...
