'Mercedes ving bot met goedkope versie motor afgelopen jaar'

Volgens het Duitse Auto Motor und Sport heeft Mercedes afgelopen jaar geprobeerd een goedkope versie van haar motor aan te bieden bij teams. Deze krachtbron zou volgens het bericht slechts tien miljoen euro kosten, in vergelijking tot de zeventien miljoen euro die Lotus, Force India en Williams momenteel betalen. De teams waren echter niet geïnteresseerd in deze krachtbron.

De goedkopere motor zou volgens teambaas Toto Wolff minder settings hebben, maar wel langer meegaan. Een coureur zou per seizoen slechts twee of drie motoren nodig hebben. Deze krachtbron zou per rondje 'slechts' drie tot vier tienden langzamer zijn dan de motoren die nu worden gebruikt. "Maar," laat Toto Wolff weten, "geen enkel team heeft ons destijds voor deze motoren benaderd. Niemand wilde deze versie hebben."
