McLaren kwam te vroeg voor Perez volgens Force India

De teambaas van Force India, Bob Fernley heeft het gevoel dat het jaar dat Sergio Perez voor McLaren reed te vroeg was in zijn carrière. Na een zeer succesvol tweede seizoen bij Sauber in 2012, kreeg Perez de kans om Lewis Hamilton te vervangen bij McLaren. Voor de Mexicaan was het een zeer zwaar jaar, en na slechts één jaar werd hij al vervangen door McLaren-junior coureur Kevin Magnussen. Gelukkig kreeg Perez de kans bij Force India, en daar bouwde de Mexicaan weer vertrouwen op in zijn kunnen. Tijdens de laatste race in Rusland pakte Perez een derde plaats voor Force India.

“Door vertrouwen in Perez te hebben, heeft het team ervoor gezorgd dat Sergio zich comfortabel voelt bij ons”, vertelt de teambaas van Force India. “Voor Checo was zijn tijd bij McLaren een slechte ervaring. Ik denk ook dat de overstap naar McLaren te vroeg kwam voor hem. Perez is vooral sterk in zijn races, maar je merkt dat hij steeds sterker wordt in de kwalificaties, dat komt ook omdat hij zich thuis voelt bij ons. Sergio en Nico Hülkenberg zijn allebei erg sterk en ik ben ook blij dat we met beide volgend jaar doorgaan”, aldus Bob Fernley.

    Ik deel die mening wel. Als jongeling zo vroeg instappen bij een topteam is riskant. Dan worden er bepaalde resultaten verwacht, resultaten waar McLaren zelf ook moeite mee had om die te behalen.

    Aan de andere kant is McLaren ook redelijk wispelturig en hebben ze Perez en Magnussen niet voldoende tijd te geven om zich te ontwikkelen, één seizoen is daar te kort voor denk ik. Maar ook dat is wel weer te begrijpen als iemand als Alonso zich aandient om voor je te komen rijden.

    Ik denk dat het combinatie van vele dingen is en het is goed om te zien dat de prestaties er bij FI wel uitkomen. Hij is vaak de betere dan Hulkenberg, iemand die ik vooraf eigenlijk iets hoger inschatte.

    Wat me vooral opvalt is dat Hulkenberg een seizoen goed start maar matig eindigt in vergelijking met zijn teamgenoot. Perez rijdt gewoon een redelijk seizoen en zeker na de B versie veel meer punten behaald.

    Eerlijk is eerlijk, die Perez is de laatste races super bezig. En ik denk dat als je na 2 jaar bij Sauber heb gereden en je krijgt een kans om voor mc Laren te rijden dat geen slechte keus was, dat het anders uitpakt kun je van tevoren nooit weten. Dus te vroeg? Niemand zal het weten maar hij rijd vollopig voor zijn oude mc Laren team :)

    Zo slecht deed Perez het ook niet ten opzichte van Button die toen al 3 jaar voor McLaren reed. Ik denk ook niet dat het te vroeg was voor Perez. Ik denk met name dat ze hem gewoon nog een jaar had moeten geven. In plaats daarvan gaven ze Magnussen het stoeltje en die presteerde toch echt wel minder goed.
