Button: “Ik hoop dat Alonso mij om de oren rijdt dit weekend”

Een veel voorkomend gezegde in de Formule 1 is: ‘Je teamgenoot is je grootste concurrent.’ Dat gaat dit weekend niet op voor de McLaren-coureurs. Sterker nog, Jenson Button hoopt compleet om de oren te worden gereden door teamgenoot Fernando Alonso. De Spanjaard heeft de beschikking over de motorupdate van Honda, terwijl Button het nog moet doen met de oude versie.

Tijdens de vorige Grand Prix reden beide McLaren-coureurs nog met de derde versie van Honda dit jaar. Tijdens de vrije trainingen op vrijdag reed Alonso echter met de nieuwere vierde versie, wat de Spanjaard op een gridstraf kwam te staan. Dit weekend zal Alonso het hele weekend met de nieuwste versie van Honda rijden, terwijl Button met de oudere versie blijft rijden. Als alles goed gaat zal de Brit volgende week tijdens de Grand Prix van Mexico de motorupdate van Honda kunnen gebruiken.

“Normaal als je teamgenoten bent wil je allebei hetzelfde materiaal hebben”, zegt Button. “Maar ik hoop dat dit echt een hele goede update is. Ik hoop dat Fernando dit weekend heel snel zal zijn en mij om de oren rijdt. Heel raar om te zeggen dit, maar voor deze keer meen ik het echt.”

“Als je in gevecht bent voor de wereldtitel of podiumplaatsen moet alles hetzelfde zijn. In onze situatie maakt het niet zoveel uit. Je moet gewoon wat uitproberen”, aldus de McLaren-coureur.

Button zegt ondanks zijn oudere motor voor punten te gaan dit weekend: “Dit circuit past veel beter bij onze auto dan Sochi. We pakte daar punten omdat we daar niets fout deden. Ik hoop dat we hier nog iets competitiever zijn en weer punten kunnen scoren.”

Dat zou wat zijn als die ineens het podium zou bereiken.
In die zin kan ik de uitspraak van Button wel begrijpen.
Vrees dat de realiteit toch anders zal zijn

Slimme vent die Alonso, eerst een niet noemenswaardige update aan Button gunnen en dan bij de grote update zelf als eerste mee rijden. Doet ie goed :)

Gezien Honda's reputatie moeten ze in staat zijn om aansluiting te vinden. Persoonlijk denk ik dat we de McClarens volgend jaar veel hoger gaan zien eindigen.
Indien de update succesvol is, krijgt STR ( voor wat betreft dit seizoen...) er in ieder geval een directe concurrent bij.

Ik snap die opmerking best wel, dit seizoen is voor McLaren/Honda eigenlijk gewoon een grote lange test fase, beide rijders zijn terdege bewust ze momenteel gewoon geen kans hebben om ook maar enigszins te rijden waar eigenlijk behoren te staan in de competitie.
Als je dan een nieuwe "test" gaat doen met een upgrade waarvan je niet weet welk resultaat dit gaat opleveren, ga je niet gelijk alles ermee uitvoeren.

Maar op moment Alonso plots in de middenmoot mee kan komen of zelfs nog beter, geloof mij maar, Button staat dan heel hard te bonken op Honda's garage van doe mij ook eventjes zo'n motor, of ik sloop hem hoogst persoonlijk uit Alonso's wagen en zet hem bij mij erin
