Het Formule 1-seizoen 2015 is aanbeland bij de zeventiende race op het programma. Mexico is voor het eerst sinds 1992 weer gastheer voor een Grand Prix. Het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City vormt, in gerenoveerde toestand, het strijdtoneel voor de race van komende zondag. Het kampioenschap is reeds beslist. Na zijn zege in Austin is Lewis Hamilton niet meer te achterhalen.

Het circuit

Het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez te Mexico City meet 4.304 meter en telt zestien bochten, waarvan negen naar rechts. De coureurs moeten zondag tijdens de Mexicaanse Grand Prix 71 rondjes afleggen. De kwalificatie en de race vangen aan om 13.00 uur plaatselijke tijd, dat is om 20.00 uur Nederlandse tijd. De uitzendingen van Sport1 beginnen op zaterdag en zondag respectievelijk om 19.45 uur en 19.00 uur.

Over het hernieuwde circuit in Mexico City is weinig bekend. Op papier lijken bochten 1, 4 en 12 de beste mogelijkheden voor inhaalacties te bieden. De oude Peraltada-bocht is gesneuveld in de door Hermann Tilke doorgevoerde veranderingen aan de lay-out. In plaats daarvan is een soort infield gecreëerd, met een stadiongedeelte en tribunes die tot de nok toe gevuld zullen zijn.

De kanshebbers

Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez een baan waarop motorvermogen een grote rol zal spelen. Het circuit bevat een aantal lange rechte stukken en de gemiddelde snelheid zal vrij hoog liggen. Dat speelt de teams met Mercedes-aandrijving in de kaart en het fabrieksteam van Mercedes is uiteraard de torenhoge favoriet.

Ferrari is de voorbije weken wel naderbij gekropen, maar zelf verwachten ze in Maranello niet al te veel van Mexico. Pas in Abu Dhabi denkt de Scuderia weer een serieuze gooi naar een zege te kunnen doen. Williams en Red Bull Racing gelden als geduchte concurrenten voor een podiumplaats. Het is ook de vraag waar Scuderia Toro Rosso en Max Verstappen komend weekend toe in staat zijn. De jonge Nederlander stal in VS de show door als vierde te eindigen, maar dat biedt geen enkele garantie voor de Mexicaanse race. Opnieuw punten pakken zou al goed zijn.

Lokale held

De Grand Prix van Mexico voor 2015 was binnen de kortste keren uitverkocht. Dat is na een lange absentie niet verwonderlijk, maar de aanwezigheid van Sergio Perez zal ook meegespeeld hebben. Aan de Force India-coureur om de Mexicaanse eer hoog te houden. De voortekenen zijn wat dat betreft goed. Perez verkeert in een blakende vorm getuige zijn podiumplek in Rusland en de vijfde plaats in de VS.

Het weer

Het weer zou zomaar een factor kunnen zijn bij de terugkeer van de Formule 1 in Mexico. De voorspellingen geven voor elke dag van het weekend kans op regen op. Sommige weersites hebben het zelfs over 90 tot 100 procent kans op neerslag voor zondag. Andere weerstations achten de kans op regen het grootst voor vrijdag. De temperatuur schommelt het hele weekend rond de 22 graden.

Heb al wat simulatorsessies gezien en het ziet er nogal saai uit, net zoiets als Rusland.

Wat ook invloed kan hebben is de hoogte.
Het circuit ligt met ruim 2200 meter boven zeeniveau veruit het hoogste van alle circuits.

Op 2200 meter is de luchtdruk slechts 75% van wat het op zeeniveau is. Er is dus minder luchtweerstand maar ook minder vermogen en ook het brandstofverbruik zal lager zijn; goed nieuws voor Renault en Honda.
Er is uiteraard ook minder downforce dus mechanische grip is belangrijker dan elders.

Dit kan, nat of droog, heel interessant worden.

  Al zal het in Mexico niet zo heet zijn als in Bahrein, het kan toch een probleem worden.

  Turbomotoren zijn hier niet zo gevoelig voor. Minder luchtweerstand/downforce kan kan gecompenseerd worden in de aerodynamische afstelling.

  Maar dat geldt dan toch ook voor de andere teams? Kun je me uitleggen waarom dat dan voor de Renault en Honda meer op zal leveren?

  Omdat Renault en Honda meer brandstofverbruik hebben dan andere teams en dus voorzichtiger moeten doen met hun brandstof. Maar door deze gunstige omstandigheden, kunnen zowel Renault als Honda meer uit hun auto halen.

  @Pietjebell, stel je hebt 1000 pk vermogen en je moet 10% inlveren, dan lever je dus 100 pk in. Als je maar 800 pk hebt en je levert 10% in dan lever je 'slechts' 80 pk in.

  Turbo's maken wel iets uit maar uiteindelijk moet de lucht er wel zijn.
  Je kan de vleugels wel opdraaien voor meer downforce, maar dat geeft onevenredig meer weerstand. Het compromis zal toch minder downforce zijn.
  
  Ik verwacht dat de teams die het in de hitte goed doen het ook hier goed doen, want ook in de warmte is de lucht ijler.
  Ondanks dat het een hoge snelheids circuit is kan Toro Rosso het dus wel eens heel goed doen, zeker nu ze geen brandstof hoeven te sparen.
  We zullen heel wat minder achterlichten zien knipperen voor het aanremmen van de bochten denk ik zo :)

  Hoe meer informatie ik heb, des te meer kan ik de TR kansen inschatten voor Mexico. Er spelen daar zo veel factoren mee en als ze nu een snellere wagen hadden, dan was het niet zo'n probleem, maar ja......
