Pedro Piquet hoopt in voetsporen vader Nelson te treden

Pedro Piquet, de jongste zoon van drievoudig wereldkampioen Nelson Piquet, hoopt in de voetsporen van zijn vader te treden. De andere zoon van Piquet, Nelson Piquet Jr, reed in 2008 en 2009 Formule 1 zonder succes. Piquet Jr's loopbaan in de Formule 1 werd om zeep geholpen door 'crashgate' waarbij Piquet Jr. opzettelijk crashte om teamgenoot Fernando Alonso te laten winnen.

Pedro Piquet werd al twee keer kampioen in de Braziliaanse Formule 3 en komt momenteel uit in de Toyota Racing Series, een winterkampioenschap in Nieuw-Zeeland. Pedro Piquet hoopt zich hiermee voor te bereiden op een toekomst in Europa. Vader Nelson was bij de eerste drie races van zijn zoon aanwezig.

Pedro Piquet over de rol van zijn vader tijdens raceweekends: “Iedere keer als hij er bij is, geeft hij mij advies en helpt hij mee. Hij laat me echter ook dingen zelf uitzoeken. Mijn vader is een fantastische steun. Ik luister naar hem omdat hij het beste voorbeeld is. Ik kan me geen betere steun en toeverlaat toewensen.”

Het pad voor de toekomst van Pedro Piquet is al uitgestippeld. Over zijn toekomstplannen: “In dit kampioenschap zitten rijders die met het juiste budget het tot de Formule 1 kunnen schoppen. Voor ons is dat niet anders. Ik denk nog twee jaar Formule 3 te doen en hoop dan de stap te kunnen zetten naar de GP2 of Formule Renault. Het uiteindelijke doel is natuurlijk de Formule 1.”

Mooie naam om weer in de Formule 1 te hebben. Alle zonen van Nelson Sr. zijn wel een stuk knapper dan hemzelf. Ben wel benieuwd naar de lineup van deze moeders ;)

Lijkt me niet zulk talent om in de voetsporen van pa en broer te kunnen komen.
Hij eindigde gisteren pas 5de in het eindklassement van het niet zo druk bezet Toyota Racing Series tegen sommige piloten die nog debuteren in de FR 2.0.
