Verstappen toekomstig wereldkampioen volgens Stoddart

Tien jaar geleden verdween de naam Minardi definitief uit de Formule 1. Paul Stoddart, een Australische zakenman die zijn geld had verdiend in de luchtvaart, verkocht de renstal aan Red Bull die het omdoopte tot opleidingsteam. Onder de naam Scuderia Toro Rosso is het team inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een vaste waarde in het middenveld.

Stoddart kijkt met een goed gevoel terug op het moment dat hij besloot het financieel armlastige Minardi te verkopen: "Toen ik Minardi na het seizoen 2000 overnam hebben we ieder jaar een gevecht moeten leveren. Het werd ieder jaar moeilijker om voldoende budget bij elkaar te krijgen. Met het huidige klimaat in de Formule 1 hadden we niet meer bestaan. Het is goed geweest dat ik de renstal heb verkocht, ik wilde zorgen dat de banen van het personeel behouden bleven."

Stoddart denkt dat het voor Minardi en zijn werknemers goed geweest is dat Red Bull het team overnam. "Met Minardi moesten we ieder jaar een zwaar gevecht leveren", verwijst hij in een interview met het DuitseMotorsport Total naar de financiële problemen waarmee zijn team ieder seizoen kampte. "In het huidige Formule 1-tijdperk was het voor ons heel moeilijk geworden om het budget bij elkaar te krijgen."

Ondanks de overname ziet Stoddart nog steeds kenmerken terug van zijn oude team: "Veel mensen uit die tijd werken er nog steeds, het is eigenlijk nog steeds Minardi maar dan met een andere naam, andere kleuren en meer geld." Stoddart had net als Red Bull gevoel voor talentvolle coureurs en liet tweevoudig wereldkampioen Fernando Alonso en Mark Webber debuteren. De grootste doorbraak tot dusver had Sebastian Vettel bij Toro Rosso, hij wist de renstal in 2008 de tot dusver enige overwinning te bezorgen op een kletsnat Monza.

Over de huidige coureurs is Stoddart ook goed te spreken: "Max Verstappen en Carlos Sainz Jr. zijn beide grote talenten. Ik zie met name in Max Verstappen een toekomstig wereldkampioen."

  Kerel met karakter die graag tegendraads was, en dat niet onder stoelen of banken stak. Gedreven door emotie en passie altijd. Al hing de Minardi in de bomen naast het circuit, dan nog nog geloofde Paul in een podium. Van mij mag hij morgen terugkomen als team baas. Mooie vent inderdaad.

  Klopt helemaal, dat soort figuren missen we nu behoorlijk. Stoddart, Briatore (ook al piste die wel graag naast de pot), Jordan, allemaal kleurrijke figuren met autoriteit. ALs je nu kijkt dan vind ik dat mensen als Toto Wolff, Boullier, Marko nou niet echt een geweldige uitstraling hebben. Wolff is eigenlijk een grijze muis, Boullier heeft weliswaar verstand van zaken maar is toch altijd "his masters voice" en heeft de uitstraling van een stoeptegel en Marko is het verlengstuk van Mateschitz maar bovenal een jankerd eerste klas zonder enig gevoel voor humor. Ik krijg altijd een negatief gevoel bij die man. Het enige wat ik positief aan hem vind is dat ie Max heeft binnengehaald, inderdaad dan verlang je wel eens naar het verleden terug. Laat Stoddart maar komen ;-)

  Lijkt me een mooi experiment: Kaltenborn bij Sauber eruit, Stoddard erin. Zou wel eens de redding van het team kunnen zijn.

Precies, Jordan, Minardi, Stoddart, Stewart, Williams, Prost, Sauber, Super Aguri, HRT, Manor, ForceIndia en ga zo maar door, racen uit passie. Blijf het herhalen, dit soort teams heb je altijd nodig anders is het over en uit. Haas nu dus ook in dat rijtje! De man verbind gewoon zijn naam zoals andere liefhebbers en dat is knap te noemen, zeker in deze dure tijden en de sport niet zonder kritiek is.

Heb Paul Stoddart ook altijd als een positieve noot gezien in de F1 en met het zinnetje "ik wilde zorgen dat de banen van het personeel behouden bleven." kan hij eigenlijk niet meer stuk. En bij hem heb ik ook het gevoel dat dit ook zo was.

Paul kom alsjeblieft terug want de F1 heeft heel hard mensen als jij nodig!!!

Lijkt mij een geweldige opvolger voor Bernie!!!!

Heb met hem mogen kennismaken, race en rallybeurs in Maastricht. Aardige gast, al had ik moeite met zijn accetn :-) Jos Verstappen was toen ook aanwezig en de 2 hebben toen gekeuveld. Jaar later reed Verstappen voor Minardi.
Jammer dat je hier geen foto's kan plaatsen...
