Pastor Maldonado crashte vorig jaar tijdens de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk bijna toen hij Max Verstappen wilde inhalen. De voormalig coureur van het voormalige Lotus-team kende een sterke eindfase en zag Max Verstappen op zijn versleten banden steeds dichter bijkomen. Maldonado onderschatte echter het feit dat Verstappen brandstof aan het sparen was en crashte bijna in de achterkant van de Nederlander.
