Elke bocht belangrijk in kort rondje Red Bull Ring

De Red Bull Ring is komend weekend gastheer voor de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk. Het circuit in de buurt van Spielberg telt slechts negen bochten. De coureurs zullen ook maar iets meer dan een minuut nodig hebben om een rondje te voltooien. De verwachtingen zijn dat het ronderecord van 1:08.337 van Michael Schumacher uit 2003 dit weekend wel eens kan sneuvelen.

Ferrari-coureur Sebastian Vettel over de Red Bull Ring: "De baan bevindt zich te midden van de bergen. Het is een geweldig circuit met veel hoogteverschillen. Het rondje is erg kort, er zijn maar heel weinig bochten. Dat maakt het extra belangrijk om elke bocht juist aan te snijden, want je hebt niet veel gelegenheden om verloren tijd goed te maken. De race gaat over veel ronden en het is van belang om dan het juiste ritme te vinden."

McLaren-rijder Fernando Alonso voegt toe: "De Red Bull Ring is een veel korter circuit dan Bakoe, maar het is net zo uitdagend. Je kunt je tijdens een rondje geen enkele misstap veroorloven. Een ronde duurt minder dan zeventig seconden, waardoor het hele veld dicht bij elkaar staat en twee of drie tienden meer of minder een groot verschil voor je klassering kan betekenen."

Diens teamgenoot Jenson Button tot slot: "Een rondje Red Bull Ring bevat maar negen bochten. De input vanuit de cockpit moet daardoor extra precies zijn, aangezien elk foutje veel tijd kan kosten. Het circuit beschikt over een aantal plekken waar inhalen mogelijk is. De races zijn zodoende vaak spectaculair en spannend. Ik kijk uit naar de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk."

Ach, het kan altijd met nog minder bochten, zoals het AVUS circuit in Berlijn (4 bochten, maar wel 19,3km lang).

  @ScuderiaVettel#5 - Inderdaad, maar er is nooit een F1-GP gereden op uitsluitend een 'oval'. Monza heeft wel een oval waar F1 races gehouden zijn, maar daarbij maakte een de oval deel uit van een langer circuit.

  Eigenlijk zou ik dat best wel grappig vinden. Een F1 race op een Indianapolis of Daytona. En dan alleen de oval... Zal wel veel in gebeuren heb ik zo 't idee.
