Hulkenberg behoudt tweede startplaats, Palmer en Haryanto krijgen straf

Nico Hulkenberg mag zijn tweede startplaats voor de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk houden. De Duitser werd vrijgesproken van het negeren van gele vlaggen. Jolyon Palmer en Rio Haryanto kregen voor hetzelfde vergrijp wel straf.

Er werden aan het eind van Q1 gele vlaggen gezwaaid doordat Carlos Sainz zijn motor had opgeblazen. Zowel Hulkenberg, Palmer en Haryanto werden door de wedstrijdleiding verdacht dat zij geen vaart minderden voor deze gele vlaggen, omdat de drie heren hun snelste sectortijden genoteerd hadden op dat moment.

Hulkenberg kon echter met zijn telemetrie aantonen dat hij wel vaart verminderd had op het betreffende punt. Op deze manier ontloopt de Force India-rijder een straf. Palmer en Haryanto konden dat echter niet, wat beide rijders op een gridstraf van drie plaatsen komt te staan. Palmer zal hierdoor starten als 21e, Haryanto als 22e.
