Sergio Perez bepaalt toekomst tijdens zomerstop

Ondanks de sterke resultaten in de afgelopen races, met onder meer twee podiumplaatsen in Monaco en Bakoe, heeft Sergio Perez nog steeds niet zijn verblijf bij Force India verlengd.

Teambaas Vijay Mallya maakte in Silverstone weer eens zijn opwachting en ging er vanuit dat zowel Perez als teamgenoot Nico Hulkenberg aanblijven in 2017. Daarmee reageerde Mallya op geruchten dat Perez naar Ferrari zou verkassen, ondanks dat Kimi Raikkonen daar net verlengd heeft. Perez meldt aan Auto Motor und Sport echter dat hij zich nog steeds in een 'beslissend' moment voor zijn carrière bevindt.

"Voor het seizoen wist ik al dat dit een belangrijk jaar voor mij zou zijn. Een jaar dat mijn toekomst kan bepalen," aldus de Mexicaan. "Ik ben 26 en dus niet meer de allerjongste. Als ik in de komende jaren niet kan vechten voor een wereldkampioenschap, voelt het voor mij alsof mijn droom mislukt is."

Gevraagd of die droom al in 2017 verwezenlijkt moet worden, antwoordt Perez: "Er zijn zoveel goede rijders en zo weinig goed stoeltjes, dus ik weet dat het niet alleen in mijn handen ligt. Ik kan alleen mijn best doen. Ik denk dat ik in de zomerstop een beter idee heb wat mijn mogelijkheden zijn voor volgend jaar, en het geeft mij ook tijd om daarover na te denken."

Hulkenberg kent een moeizaam jaar en verbleekt naast de podiumplaatsen van Perez. Toch is de Mexicaan lovend over de Duitser. "Ik wil geen enkele teamgenoot bekritiseren, maar Nico is de beste teamgenoot die ik gehad heb. Hij is erg compleet en heeft amper zwaktes. Soms denk ik dat ik het best mogelijke gedaan heb, maar dan is het niet genoeg om Nico voor te blijven. Dat heb ik met geen andere teamgenoot ooit gehad."

Of iemand het verdiend of niet gaat het eigenlijk niet om. Als er sprake is van 3 topteams. Dat betekend dat daar dus 6 rijders kunnen rijden.
Ik vind Perez niet bij de 6 beste rijders van het veld horen. Top 10 zeker, maar top 6 denk ik net niet.

Helaas is er nu niet veel beters beschikbaar maar hij zou zeker een kans verdienen bij een topteam. En nee, dan niet een McLaren in het middenveld zoals in 2013 het geval was maar gewoon een team dat continu om podiumplekken of overwinningen kan vechten.

  Nou dan zou ik bij FI blijven, en misschien nu een contract bij Ferrari voor 2018 bedingen.
  Anders lekker een jaartje bijtekenen en dan volgend jaar kijken of je bij Ferrari of Mercedes terecht kan. Renault zie ik volgend jaar niet om podium plekken strijden, ik denk dat ze heel blij mogen zijn als ze 5e in de constructeurs kunnen worden in 2017!

  Renault zou heel goed zijn voor hem. Ze zijn nu aan het puzzelen, maar dat is een team
  met toekomst. Hij kan daar zoveel bewijzen en onderdeel worden van een nieuw succes. Ik zou het wel weten!

FI en Williams zijn momenteel de teams achter Merc, Fer en RBR.
Die zitten volgend jaar met dezelfde rijders, dus iets anders dan FI is niet beter volgend jaar.
