Contractverlenging Rosberg geen verrassing voor Wehrlein

Vrijdagochtend kreeg Pascal Wehrlein de bevestiging van wat hij eigenlijk al verwacht had: Nico Rosberg had zijn contract bij Mercedes verlengd, waardoor er voorlopig geen plaats is voor Wehrlein bij het Duitse team.

Wehrlein wordt al jaren ondersteund door Mercedes en de huidige Manor-coureur zou de eerste kandidaat zijn om Rosberg te vervangen, mocht hij Mercedes verlaten. Dat gebeurde echter niet, maar de 21-jarige gaf bij motorsport-magazin.com aan dat hij niet teleurgesteld is. "Nee, aangezien ik er al vanuit ging dat hij zijn contract zou verlengen. Het betekent dat ik nog meer tijd krijg om aan de Formule 1 te wennen."

Wat Wehrlein volgend jaar doet, is nog onbekend. Hij kan bij Manor blijven, maar mogelijk kan hij ook een vertrekkende Sergio Perez bij Force India vervangen. "Mijn toekomst ligt helemaal open. Ik heb een contract voor een jaar en ik weet niet wat ik daarna ga doen. De eerste gesprekken zullen na de zomerstop plaatsvinden."

Hoewel hij dus dicht in de buurt van een stoeltje bij Mercedes zit, heeft Wehrlein het dit jaar bij vlagen lastig gehad met teamgenoot Rio Haryanto, die niet bekend staat als een hoogvlieger. Zijn toekomst is echter nog niet verzekerd. "Als een rijder zich inkoopt bij Manor en ik daardoor geen plek heb, is er niets dat ik kan doen. Ik denk dat ik goed werk geleverd heb. Ik heb onverwachts een punt gescoord, maar je weet niet wat de toekomst gaat opleveren."

Wehrlein is een leuke coureur, maar geen F1 kampioen. Deed het heel goed in de DTM en verdient ook vasteen plekje in de F1. Maar ik zie hem niet zo snel bij Mercedes rijden. Mocht Lewis of Nico vertrekken ddan zet ik eerder mijn geld in op de komst van Vettel of Verstappen dan de komst van Wehrlein.

Wehrlein is geen hoogvlieger. En ik moet nog zien dat hij daadwerkelijk voor Mercedes GP gaat uitkomen. Remember di Resta? Mercedes houdt zulke jongens gewoon achter de hand als stok achter de deur voor de eigen coureurs.

Als Rosberg of Hamilton t.z.t. vertrekken dan kopen ze gewoon weer een dure coureur elders weg. Ik zie Vettel en zelfs Alonso daar ooit nog wel belanden.

op 13 juli liet hij nog weten niet zo happig te zijn op een langer verblijf bij Manor maar ik denk niet dat er veel anders voor hem weggelegd is volgend jaar . Ook zal hij dan moeten laten zien uit welk hout hij echt gesneden is want nog een jaartje wisselvalligheid zal hem geen goed doen.
