De balans van Max Verstappen bij de zomerstop 2016

Sinds zijn debuut in Melbourne 2015 heeft Max Verstappen heel wat los gemaakt in de wereld van de Formule 1. De jonge Nederlander laat de harten van veel Formule 1-fans sneller kloppen. Vorig jaar rond deze tijd reed Verstappen nog 'gewoon' bij Toro Rosso, het zusterteam van zijn huidige werkgever Red Bull Racing.

Het is appels met peren vergelijken, maar vorig jaar rond deze tijd had Max Verstappen tot de zomerstop 'slechts' 22 WK-punten behaald dankzij een zevende, een achtste en een knappe vierde plaats tijdens de Grand Prix van Hongarije. Verstappen was echter wel in een missie geslaagd: alle criticasters laten zien dat zijn debuut op 17-jarige leeftijd niet te vroeg was. Sterker nog: de jonge Nederlander liet commentatoren en journalisten over de hele wereld verbaasd zijn met zijn nuchtere benadering, sterke prestaties en mooie inhaalacties.

Waar Verstappen dit jaar meteen na de Grand Prix met vakantie ging, was vakantie vieren er vorig jaar niet bij. De Nederlander mocht in het weekend na de Grand Prix van Hongarije op komen draven tijdens de Gamma Racing Days op het TT-circuit in Assen. Tijdens beide dagen werd duidelijk hoe immens populair de jonge Nederlander toen al was. Op de zondag waren meer dan 90.000 mensen naar het circuit gekomen om Verstappen in actie te zien tijdens zijn twee demo-runs met een overgespoten Red Bull Racing-auto uit 2012.

Ik kan me nog goed een interview herinneren met de NOS, waarin Verstappen aangaf in 2016 te willen gaan voor +- 100 punten en minimaal een podium. Natuurlijk is het verloop van dit seizoen iets anders gelopen dan we allemaal hadden verwacht (zacht uitgedrukt :p), maar toch wel grappig dat hij z'n eigen doelstelling al heeft gehaald voor dit jaar ;)

  Zijn eigen doelstelling die hij vooraf gesteld heeft, ik denk dat deze doelstelling inmiddels wel aardig zal zijn bijgesteld.

  @MUSTFEED@ Sainz voelt zich helemaal bevrijd, die rijd de sterren van de hemel, hij is los, laat iedereen verbazen, een puntenmachine, rijd zich iedere race in de kijker, klaar voor een topteam, ;-)

  Waar gehakt wordt vallen spaanders.
  Ja hij is niet 100% foutloos maar dat is niemand, wanneer iemand beweert wel foutloos te zijn dan liegt hij/zij en is dat zijn/haar grootste fout.
  Zijn acties zijn we de reden dat ik de formule 1 weer de moeite waard vind om te kijken.

Sainz nu 30 punten, gesteld dat Max hem regelmatig voor was gebleven, zou hij aardig op koers liggen voor 100 punten. Nu is dat natuurlijk een heel ander verhaal, elk race weekend rond P3 of 4 is nu niet eens zo,n overdreven verwachting... op naar de 200 + punten

  Max had met STR echt geen 100 punten gehaald. Ze zullen in de tweede helft van het seizoen namelijk al blij moeten zijn als ze top 10 kunnen rijden.
  
  Ik denk dat Max nu de doelstelling heeft om de strijd met Ricciardo te winnen om zo de positie van eerste rijder af te dwingen voor volgend jaar. Het zal alleen niet makkelijk worden nu het zelfvertrouwen bij Ricciardo ook weer terug is.
