Stroll open voor stap naar F1, IndyCar en GP2 in 2017

Wat Lance Stroll in 2017 gaat doen is nog niet bekend. De 17-jarige Canadees leidt op dit moment het kampioenschap in de Europese Formule 3 en omdat hij zich daarop focust, zal hij pas na het seizoen een beslissing maken over zijn toekomst.

In het verleden is Stroll verbonden geweest aan het opleidingsprogramma van Ferrari, maar is nu verbonden aan Williams. Door zijn goede prestaties dit seizoen, waarin hij 61 punten voorsprong heeft op de nummer twee in het kampioenschap, zijn er geruchten ontstaan dat ook de Canadees in een keer de stap van de F3 naar de F1 kan maken.

Toch is het binnenhalen van de F3-titel het primaire doel voor Stroll, waarbij hij zich niet wil laten afleiden door lonkende interesse in de Formule 1. Dat liet hij weten aan NBC Sports. "Ik werk heel goed samen met mijn team Prema in de Formule 3. Ze begrijpen heel goed dat ik me voor honderd procent op dit kampioenschap wil concentreren. Zij willen ook dat ik het kampioenschap gewoon afmaak en voeren ook geen druk op me uit om eens in een Formule 1-bolide te stappen. Ze willen dat ik me op één ding tegelijk focus."

"Ik heb ook nog nooit in zo'n auto gereden, dus ik weet niet precies hoe dat is. Ik kijk natuurlijk wel naar de races, maar ik weet pas of er klaar voor ben als ik een paar keer in een Formule 1-auto gereden heb. Natuurlijk heb ik Formule 3 en een aantal andere klassen gereden, maar nog nooit in een Formule 1-auto. Ik weet dus niet hoe het is, hoe anders het is van wat ik nu doe, hoeveel gecompliceerder en hoeveel zwaarder het is. Dat moet ik allemaal nog uitvinden. Als ik me comfortabel voel en het lijkt alsof het de volgende stap is, zie ik niet waarom ik niet naar de Formule 1 kan stappen."

Max Verstappen zette in 2015 als laatste de stap van de F3 naar de F1. Stroll voelt geen druk om die prestatie na te doen en hij heeft natuurlijk de leeftijd aan zijn zijde. "Ik ben geen 25, maar pas 17. Ik ga me dus niet haasten, want ik heb nog tijd zat. Toch kan ik niet onbeperkt de tijd nemen, want voor je het weet staat er een andere 17-jarige klaar om jouw plekje in te nemen. Dit jaar focus ik me op het F3-kampioenschap, en voor volgend jaar zie ik wat het wordt. Of dat nou F1, GP2 of IndyCar is: we gaan datgene wat op ons pad komt veroveren."

Waarom zou je naar Amerika gaan voor de Indycar? Voor deze jongen is het een kwestie van tijd voordat hij een stoeltje in de F1 heeft weten te bemachtigen

  @SennadaSilva: Essentieel verschil met Frijns is dat papa Stroll voldoende budget heeft om hem in de F1 te helpen. De beste man is miljardair, dus zou een team kunnen kopen als hij dat zou willen.

  Het scheelt dat papa Stroll de financiële middelen heeft, dit kan net het verschil maken in het wel of niet bemachtigen van een race zitje.

Hij bezit op dit moment toch nog niet over een superlicentie? Wanneer die geen kampioen wordt in de F3 heeft hij na dit seizoen ook nog niet genoeg punten volgens mij.

  Lance hoeft helemaal geen kampioen te worden in de F3 dit jaar om aan de nodige superlicentie punten te raken.
  Daravoor tellen zijn andere uitslagen van de 3 voorafgaande jaren ook mee.
  In 2014 werd hij Italiaans F4 kampioen dus 12 punten.
  In 2015 won hij de Toyota Racing Series, incaseerde daarvoor 10 punten en zijn 5de plaats in de FIA F3 bracht hem 8 punten op.
  Dus dit jaar nog minimum 10 te halen waarvoor een 4de plaats in de FIA F3 al voldoende zou zijn, wat mijn inziens hem niet meer ontglippen kan.
