Mercedes ziet geen heil in eigen opleidingsteam

Mercedes is niet van plan om zich in te kopen bij Manor Racing en dat team om te toveren tot een opleidingsteam voor de hoofdmacht, in de stijl van Red Bull Racing en Scuderia Toro Rosso. Mercedes heeft met Pascal Wehrlein en Esteban Ocon al twee talenten gestald bij Manor. Over een uitgebreide samenwerking valt te praten, maar daar blijft het dan ook bij.

Mercedes-motorsportbaas Toto Wolff legt aan Autosport uit: "Toen we begonnen met het fabrieksteam van Mercedes hadden we niet capaciteit voor een opleidingsprogramma. Daardoor zijn een aantal talenten aan onze neus voorbij gegaan, met Max Verstappen als treffend voorbeeld. We konden hem alleen een stoeltje in de GP2 aanbieden, maar dat is natuurlijk niet zo mooi als een zitje in de Formule 1 bij Toro Rosso."

"Met Manor sloten we een overeenkomst voor Pascal en dat heeft goed uitgepakt. Toen Rio Haryanto weg moest zagen we onze kans schoon om Esteban ook bij Manor onder te brengen. We hebben een paar weken onderhandeld en een akkoord bereikt. We steunen Manor op een aantal punten. De samenwerking heeft nu meerdere invalshoeken."

"We zijn geen aandeelhouder van Manor, hebben daar ook geen plannen voor. We willen geen mede-eigenaar van het team worden of de renstal subsidiëren. De prioriteit is titels winnen met het fabrieksteam van Mercedes, maar de samenwerking met Manor kan wel verder gaan dan wat het vandaag is. Ons standpunt ten opzichte van meerdere teams bezitten in de Formule 1 is ongewijzigd. Dat zien wij niet zitten en gaat niet gebeuren."

Lijkt erop, dat Manor net zoiets gaat worden als Haas voor Ferrari.

  Mercedes kan als fabrikant van meerdere teams meer afdwingen (door kortingen op motoren te geven bijv.) dan Red Bull. Geen eigen opleidingsteam maar wel een druk middel voor zeggenschap betreft coureurs, naar blijkt.

  Een samenwerking kan toch ook een overeenkomst zijn, waarbij de talenten van Mercedes daar hun eerste races kunnen maken en ervaring opdoen.
