Jost Capito heeft eerste werkdag bij McLaren erop zitten

McLaren kondigde de komst van Jost Capito al in januari aan, maar de Duitser had gisteren pas zijn eerste werkdag bij het team. Capito is een 57-jarige Duitser met meer dan dertig jaar ervaring in de autosport. De laatste drie jaren was Capito mede verantwoordelijk voor de vele successen van Volkswagen in de rallysport.

Capito krijgt een uitvoerende functie bij McLaren en moet er voor zorgen dat er weer gewonnen wordt. De laatste zege van McLaren werd behaald tijdens de Grand Prix van Brazilië in 2012 en voor het laatste podium moeten we ook al terug naar 2014. De nieuwe relatie tussen Honda en McLaren leverde tot dusver een vijfde plaats op als beste klassering.

Capito liet aan Skysports het volgende los waarom hij voor de stap naar de Formule 1 heeft gekozen: "De rallysport is fantastisch, maar de Formule 1 is het allergrootste wat je kunt berekenen. Ik ben niet alleen in de Formule 1 gestapt om iets nieuws te proberen. Ik ben namelijk eerder betrokken geweest bij deze sport. Ik heb gekozen voor McLaren omdat het een van de oudste en meest succesvolle teams is in deze sport. Als kind was ik al groot fan van het team. Ik heb er nooit van gedroomd om leidinggevende te worden bij dit team, maar nu ga ik dat wel doen. Toen Ron Dennis me deze kans bood kon ik niet weigeren."

Capito laat verder weten dat hij ervan overtuigd is dat McLaren volgend jaar de volgende stap vooruit kan zetten: "De auto van dit jaar is niet slecht, maar voor volgend jaar ziet het er veel beter uit. Met de nieuwe regels op komst kunnen we het verschil gaan maken."

Nog steeds onduidelijk of dit nu betekent dat Boullier wordt gedegradeerd naar assistent-teambaas of dat ze simpelweg de zoveelste managementlaag aan het toevoegen zijn (dus tussen Boullier en Ron Dennis)
