Bottas ijzersterk in kwalificatie met vijfde plaats, Massa stelt teleur

Voor het team van Williams kende de kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Italië een wisselend verloop. Waar Valtteri Bottas een ijzersterke ronde reed en zich met een vijfde plaats tussen de Ferrari's en Red Bull's wist te wringen, stelde Felipe Massa teleur met een elfde plaats.

In de derde vrije training waren beide Williams-coureurs nog sneller dan de coureurs van Red Bull, maar in de kwalificatie kreeg alleen Valtteri Bottas het voor elkaar sneller te zijn dan Daniel Ricciardo en Max Verstappen. Bottas over zijn kwalificatie: "De kwalificatie verliep zeer goed voor mij. Ik heb alles eruit gehaald wat erin zat. Ik denk dat dit een van mijn beste kwalificaties ooit was. Hopelijk lukt het deze lijn door te trekken naar de race.

Felipe Massa kende in de andere FW38 een minder succesvolle sessie. De Braziliaan, die na dit seizoen stopt als Formule 1-coureur, laat het volgende optekenen: "In de aanloop naar de tweede run in het tweede deel van de kwalificatie kon ik de boel niet genoeg opwarmen. Gelukkig heb ik wel een vrije bandenkeuze en hopelijk helpt dat mij in de race."
