Jagende Ricciardo vergde alles van zijn banden

Red Bull Racing-coureur Daniel Ricciardo kwam zondag een halve seconde tekort om zijn eerste overwinning van het seizoen te boeken. Na een late pitstop had hij dertien ronden op een setje ultrazachte banden om een gat van meer dan 25 seconden naar Mercedes-rijder Nico Rosberg te overbruggen. De Australiër strandde op 0,448 seconde.

Meer zat er niet in, stelt teambaas Christian Horner in gesprek met Autosport. "Ik denk niet dat Daniel en wij meer hadden kunnen doen. Nico beleefde een ijzersterk weekend. In de kwalificatie was hij ongenaakbaar en in de race hebben we alles uit de kast gehaald. Mercedes had volgens mij de intentie om ook nog een pitstop te maken, naar na onze snelle stop en de goede out lap van Daniel stapten ze daarvan af. Daarom reed Rosberg door tot aan de finish."

"Volgens onze berekeningen zouden we twee ronden voor het einde de aansluiting vinden. Daniel vergde in zijn jacht op Nico alles van zijn banden en aan het einde was het beste er wel vanaf. Hij deed het fantastisch door het gat naar Rosberg te dichten, maar Mercedes had net genoeg over om toch te winnen. Na twee uur racen eindigden we binnen een halve seconde. Een topprestatie, het was alleen net niet genoeg."

      Christian blies nog op zijn jachthoorn, maar het mocht niet baten. Hij had net zo goed de laatste ronden kunnen chillen. Verspilde energie. Met het inhalen hadden ze niet gerekend

      Er zou maar net een technisch mankement kunnen opspelen bij Rosberg een ronde voor het einde, en dan wil je daar zo dicht mogelijk op zitten. Zie ook Max en Rosberg op Silverstone.

    De berekening zat er dus naast, aangezien RIC de aansluiting pas aan het eind vond. Variabelen gemist ? Of voldeed Daniel gewoon niet aan de verwachting ? Net als Max.

      Of Rosberg presteerde boven verwachting, of de banden slijten sneller door het hardere pushen, of Ricciardo maakte tussendoor enkele kleine foutjes..

      Variabelen zijn wat ze zijn; Variabel. Dit blijven dus inschattingen die gemaakt moeten worden op basis van gegevens die op dat moment beschikbaar zijn. Een ronde later kunnen deze dus alweer varieëren.

      Ricciardo reed op een gegeven moment dezelfde rondetijd als Rosberg als gevolg van achterblijvers. (Is natuurlijk een factor die moeilijk in te calculeren is.) Als dat niet was gebeurd, had Ricciardo wellicht nog een poging kunnen wagen in de laatste ronde. Verder deed deze situatie me denken aan de overwinning van Max Verstappen: de op versere banden jagende partij kan het vaak toch niet waarmaken tegen de partij met de hardere band. Een gat van 20 seconden dichtrijden is één ding, maar daarna moeten je banden nog vers genoeg zijn (lees: ongeveer twee seconden per rondje sneller) om er ook voorbij te kunnen.

    Het maakte de race wel spannend moet ik zeggen! Maar dat hij met zo een grote stappen dichterbij kwam is niet raar, aangezien Rosberg op een andere compound reed die ook nog eens behoorlijk wat rondjes erop hadden zitten. Maar zoals ze zeggen; ernaar toe is een en er voorbij is een ander. Ik denk dat hij met een halve seconde ook uet genoeg had.

    Iets te overmoedig als je het mij vraagt. In schone lucht, maar in razend tempo, naar de kop rijden was inderdaad knap... maar vervolgens in de minimaal resterende tijd ook nog een succesvolle inhaalactie plegen op Rosberg, die rondenlang in de spaarstand zijn rondjes reed om te kunnen pareren, zag ik op versleten US-banden niet meer gebeuren.
