Verstappen: "Japan zal altijd bijzonder blijven"

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen keert over twee weken terug op het circuit waar hij zijn eerste meters tijdens een officiële Formule 1-sessie maakte. De jonge Nederlander nam twee jaar geleden namens Scuderia Toro Rosso deel aan de eerste vrije training op Suzuka. Maar eerst staat volgende week nog Sepang op het programma. De Red Bull Racing-coureur blikt vooruit naar de Grands Prix van Maleisië en Japan.

Verstappen: "Maleisië is erg vochtig en erg heet, bijna zoals in Singapore. Sepang is een mooi circuit, erg cool. Het heeft een lekkere combinatie van snelle bochten bij bocht 5 en 6, en goede inhaalmogelijkheden bij bocht 9. Het weer kan er aardig variëren: het kan er flink stormen, maar de baan kan ook weer snel opdrogen vanwege de hoge temperatuur. Vorig jaar heb ik de omgeving verkend en ik vind Maleisië een erg mooi land. Ik heb er echt genoten."

"Na Maleisië gaan we naar Japan en ik breng een paar dagen in Tokyo door voor ik naar het circuit ga, wat ook leuk zal zijn. Japan zal altijd speciaal voor me blijven, omdat ik daar mijn Formule 1-debuut tijdens de vrije training heb gemaakt. Suzuka is een echt cool circuit. Vooral de eerste sector, die erg snel is en precies wat coureurs mooi vinden. Er zijn niet veel uitloopstroken, dus je moet geconcentreerd blijven: het is een ouderwetse baan, erg uitdagend en veeleisend."

"Japan heeft ontzettend gepassioneerde fans, ze zijn erg aardig en de steun die we krijgen is echt mooi. Ze geven ons ook allerlei cadeautjes, waar ze veel moeite in steken. Ik geniet echt van Japan en het is altijd fijn om er terug te keren."

Tost 'Max verliezen klap voor team.

In april van dit jaar wisten we niet beter of Max Verstappen zou zijn races in 2016 gewoon voor Toro Rosso rijden. Dat het anders liep, is bekend. Max nam bij de Grand Prix van Spanje het stoeltje van Daniil Kvyat over bij Red Bull en de Rus deed een stap terug naar het team van Franz Tost. Die switch viel niet alleen Kvyat zwaar, maar ook Toro Rosso voelde het gat dat Max achterliet.

'DE COUREUR MOTIVEERT OOK HET TEAM'
'De coureur zorgt voor een deel van de motivatie bij het team. Max is een speciale coureur en om iemand als hij te verliezen in het seizoen was niet makkelijk. Daniil is ook een getalenteerde rijder, maar in het begin was het voor hem niet makkelijk om van een team als Red Bull, dat vecht voor de topplaatsen, terug te vallen naar een stal uit de middenmoot. Momenteel wordt de situatie beter', zegt Tost op Motorsport.com.

KVYAT EN VERSTAPPEN: 4 OM 116
Inmiddels zijn we 11 races verder en hoewel het appels met peren vergelijken is, kun je wel zeggen dat Verstappen minder aanpassingstijd nodig heeft gehad dan Kvyat. Hij won meteen zijn eerste race voor The Bulls in Spanje en heeft er nog 3 podiumplaatsen en in totaal 116 WK punten bij verzameld. Kvyat heeft de Italianen pas 4 WK puntjes opgeleverd. Teammaat Carlos Sainz reed in die 11 races 24 punten bij elkaar.

Afgelopen weekend vochten Max en Daniil nog een mooi robbertje uit in Singapore

Uiteindelijk ging Verstappen de Rus toch voorbij

Suzuka is ,en snel, en technische ... Ook echt een circuit voor de betere coureur. (Zware) regen is nooit zo,n succes in dit jaargetijde ,dan gaat het meestal ook gelijk goed los...

  Ook echt ontworpen zoals Hugenholz het wilde. Aanvankelijk lagen er allerlei rijstveldjes waar Hugenholz van zei dat ze er maar omheen moesten bouwen. Maar een dag of twee dagen later waren ze opeens allemaal weg.
  
  Suzuka herinnert ons meer dan de meeste circuits eraan waarom Tilke banen zo ruk zijn. Feitelijk is het alles wat Tilke niets vindt. Technisch, afwisselend, wat scherpe bochten en daar werkelijk verschillende lijnen ipv het idee dat je op een brede baan ook wel verschillende lijnen kan rijden.
  
  Overigens mag er van mij wel een tweede Japanse GP komen gezien de fans en het belang voor de autoindustrie en wat motorsport überhaupt in dat land is. Maar goed, ze gaan liever voor een extra land uit de VAE waarschijnlijk.
