Sauber-coureurs stranden in Q1

Voor het team van Sauber viel er weinig eer te behalen in de kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Maleisië. De Zwitsere renstal is het enigste team dat nog geen punten heeft gescoord dit jaar. Voor Marcus Ericsson en Felipe Nasr zat er niet meer in dan een zeventiende en achttiende startplaats.

Marcus Ericsson start de race als zeventiende en is vooral tevreden dat de lijn die vrijdag is ingezet met de auto doorgezet kon worden op zaterdag: "Na een positieve vrijdag was het vandaag ook goed. De regen die in de nacht was gevallen zorgde ervoor dat het circuit in de derde training wat anders aanvoelde, maar we gingen met een goed gevoel de kwalificatie in. Mijn rondje was best goed, ik maakte geen fouten. Het is misschien niet te zien, maar het gat met de teams in het middenveld wordt steeds kleiner."

Felipe Nasr mag een plekje achter zijn Zweedse teamgenoot starten en laat het volgende optekenen na de kwalificatie: "Het moge duidelijk zijn dat dit niet de plek is waar we willen staan. In mijn laatste poging bevonden de banden zich niet in het juiste raamwerk. Ik verloor met name in de eerste sector veel tijd. Voor de rest was het een goede ronde, maar niet goed genoeg om door te dringen tot het tweede deel van de kwaificatie. Hopelijk kunnen we morgen een sterk resultaat neerzetten."
