Alonso van P22 naar P7, Jenson Button viert jubileum met twee punten

Het team van McLaren verlaat Maleisië met acht punten na een zevende plaats van Fernando Alonso en een negende plaats voor Jenson Button, die voor de driehonderdste keer aan de start van een Grand Prix stond. Met name het resultaat van Alonso is knap, aangezien de Spanjaard achteraan begon na een gridpenalty vanwege een motorwissel.

Alonso is blij met zijn race en de gevechten die hij voerde tijdens de Grand Prix: "Voor ons was dit een erg spannende race met een aantal mooie gevechten. Bij de start won ik meteen een paar plekken en we bleven uit de chaos in de eerste bocht. Ik was enigzins verbaasd dat ik na een paar rondjes al in de punten reed. Ik discusseerde toen ook met mijn engineer over de strategie. Uiteindelijk besloten we een agressieve aanpak te kiezen. De laatste Virtual Safety Car kwam ons goed uit, zo konden we de zachte banden wat sparen. Na de gridstraf van eerder dit weekend hadden we wat geluk nodig en gelukkig kregen we die."

Jenson Button startte de race als negende en eindigde ook op die positie. De jubilaris laat het volgende optekenen na de race: "Ik had een vrij aardige race, maar had wat pech met de Virtual Safety Car. De auto's achter me stopten drie keer, terwijl ik maar twee keer ben gestopt. Toen de mannen achter me gestopt waren kwam de Virtual Safety Car en verloor ik mijn voorsprong. Het geluk is de laatste tijd niet echt aan mijn kant. Na de start lag ik nog even vierde. Ik wist dat ik dat niet vast zou houden, maar zonder de Virtual Safety Car hadden we zevende kunnen worden. Hopelijk valt het kwartje mijn kant op de komende vijf races."

  Als je in Maleisie al kan vechten met de FI en Williams dan zou je theoretisch gezien ze kunnen verslaan in Japan, maar denk dat track position daar ook heel belangrijk zal zijn, dus de zaterdag zal heel belangrijk zijn.

Ja, ze hebben een pintje verdient in "The dog and Button" pub.
Het heeft wat jaren geduurd maar ik begin weer vertrouwen te krijgen in McLaren en Honda.

Mooi voor Honda ook. nadat ze vorig jaar eigenlijk elke gp achteraan eindigde en bijna elke gp een motor moesten wisselen. zie je nu dat ze elke gp meedoen voor punten.
Hopelijk volgend jaar een nog betere motor en dan kunnen misschien wel meedoen voor het podium.
