Max Verstappen start als derde vanwege gridstraf Kimi Raikkonen, ook Jenson Button krijgt straf

Max Verstappen schuift een plekje op op de startopstelling zonder daar iets voor te hoeven doen. Vanuit Japan werd bevestigd dat de versnellingsbak van Kimi Raikkonen vervangen is en dat kost de Fin, die als derde zou starten, een straf op van vijf startplaatsen.

Ook Daniel Ricciardo en Force India-coureur Sergio Perez schuiven door de straf van Raikkonen een plekje op. Ook Jenson Button zal verder naar achteren starten. De ervaren rot kende een teleurstellende kwalificatie, Honda heeft besloten de volledige power unit te vervangen. Button krijgt een gridstraf van 35 plaatsen, waardoor de wereldkampioen van 2009 als laatste zal starten.
