Stroll een geschenk voor jubilerende Canadese GP

Francois Dumontier, promotor van de Grand Prix van Canada, was gisteren ook aanwezig bij de presentatie van Lance Stroll bij Williams. In 2017 rijdt er weer een Canadees in de Formule 1. Het is tien jaar geleden dat Jacques Villeneuve actief was op het hoogste niveau. De wereldkampioen van 1997 heeft eindelijk een opvolger in de persoon van Stroll.

Dumontier ziet de komst van het 18-jarige talent als een geschenk. Aan Reuters verkondigde hij: "Mijn eerste gedachte gaat uit naar de fans. Na tien jaar is het wachten voorbij. De Grand Prix van Canada bestaat vijftig jaar in 2017 en we zien Lance als een mooi cadeautje om dat te vieren. Natuurlijk denken we dat dit onze kaartverkoop ten goede zal komen."

Stroll zal in eigen land op de steun van de fans kunnen rekenen. "Ik denk dat de supporters zich massaal achter hem zullen scharen. Ik weet nog uit de tijd dat Jacques Villeneuve reed dat hij luidkeels aangemoedigd werd door de fans. Ik verwacht dat ze hetzelfde zullen doen voor Lance", aldus Dumontier.

Over de status van de onderhandelingen voor een nieuw contract voor de Canadese Grand Prix zegt hij: "Ik ben vol vertrouwen dat we in de komende dagen alles af kunnen handelen. De gesprekken tussen Bernie Ecclestone, de stad Montreal en mij verlopen goed. Ik geloof dat we dit over een aantal dagen achter ons kunnen laten."

Stroll is vooral een (financiele) zegen voor Williams! Of hij dat ook voor de sport is zal moeten blijken.

Heel benieuwd hoe Stroll het gaat doen in 2017, of hij zich staande kan houden tussen al die toppers en zeker naast een kanon als Bottas. Doet hij dat, dan waren alle verhalen ten tijde van Verstappens debuut dat de sport inmiddels te makkelijk en toegankelijk is steekhoudend. Heeft Stroll alle mogelijke moeite, dan geeft dat Verstappens stormachtige entree in F1 toch wat extra glans. Excited om Stroll te gaan zien!
