F1-titel geen droom, maar doel voor Verstappen

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen laat geen misverstand bestaan over zijn ambities in de Formule 1. De jonge Nederlander gaat voor het hoogst haalbare, het kampioenschap. Dat verklaarde hij tijdens een vraaggesprek bij Exact Live in de Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.

Op de vraag van presentator Humberto Tan of de wereldtitel geen droom, maar een doel is voor hem, antwoordde Verstappen via een liveverbinding vanuit Brazilië: "Absoluut! Ik denk dat meer coureurs als doel hebben om wereldkampioen te worden, maar dat is inderdaad mijn streven voor de toekomst."

Welke races uit het afgelopen seizoen sprongen er wat hem betreft uit? "Barcelona, dat is natuurlijk de eerste die ik noem. Ook de race in Silverstone was heel goed en die in Japan. Eigenlijk heb ik best veel goede momenten gekend, maar die drie waren het meest positief."

Verstappen is geregeld onderwerp van discussie. Zelf trekt hij zich daar weinig van aan. "Ik denk dat het belangrijk is om er neutraal onder te blijven. Er komen positieve en negatieve meningen voorbij, maar het gaat erom je eigen ding te blijven doen en zo goed mogelijk te presteren op het circuit."

Voor komend weekend in Brazilië hoopt hij dat de voorspellingen voor regen uitkomen. "Ja, absoluut, dat is voor ons de beste kans om te winnen. De race op Silverstone begon ook in de regen en dat zag er heel goed uit. Ik ben benieuwd. In de regen speelt het motorvermogen een minder belangrijke rol en bovendien heeft onze auto enorm veel grip, dus dat komt op een natte baan beter tot zijn recht."

  Start is dan achter de Safety car, en ze rijden dan 3 rondjes. De safety car gaat weg en we krijgen dan een gewone start. Maar de rijden hebben de baan kunnen verkennen en weten dan ook waar het gevaarlijk is.
