Sirotkin volgend jaar derde rijder bij Renault F1?

Sergey Sirotkin mocht vrijdag weer eens opdraven voor een vrije training namens het team van Renault. De Rus kwam in Brazilië door een probleem met de oliedruk niet verder dan tien rondjes en de langzaamste tijd. Teambaas Frederic Vasseur was desalniettemin onder de indruk.

Renault ziet in Sirotkin een optie voor de positie van derde rijder voor het seizoen 2017. De Rus zou dan de eerste gegadigde zijn om in te stappen als een van de vaste coureurs Nico Hülkenberg en Jolyon Palmer om wat voor reden dan ook verhinderd is.

Vasseur deelde aan Sportbox mede: "Ik wil de samenwerking met Sergey graag voortzetten. We moeten alleen een manier bedenken om hem meer tijd in de auto te laten doorbrengen. Volgend jaar hebben we hetzelfde systeem voor jonge rijders."

"We hebben echter ook een coureur met enige ervaring nodig om bij te dragen aan de ontwikkeling van de auto. Sergey is in mijn ogen een geschikte kandidaat. Volgend seizoen wordt moeilijk voor het team en we hebben niet alleen de twee vaste coureurs, maar ook een sterke derde rijder nodig."
