Alonso plaatst huidige vorm boven vorm tijdens gewonnen titels

Fernando Alonso strijdt sinds zijn terugkomst bij McLaren niet echt mee om de podiumplaatsen. De combinatie McLaren-Honda is daarvoor niet sterk genoeg gebleken, maar de Spanjaard is wel tevreden over zijn eigen prestaties. Naar eigen zeggen presteert Alonso zelfs beter dan hij deed toen hij zijn twee wereldtitels behaalde.

De seizoenen waarin Alonso wereldkampioen werd, 2005 en 2006, komen zelfs niet in zijn persoonlijke top drie. "Waarschijnlijk was 2012 mijn beste seizoen. Daarna komt dan 2014 en dit seizoen neemt dan de laatste plaats op het podium in", zo vertelde de Spanjaard aan Autosport. "Ik voel me in elke situatie vertrouwd in de auto en ik voel me goed, ook in de laatste tien ronden in Brazilië toen ik op veertien ronden oude banden reed. Dat vertrouwen geeft me de gelegenheid om op de limiet te rijden."

Vooral zijn prestaties ten opzichte van voormalig wereldkampioen en teamgenoot Jenson Button plezieren Alonso. Het kwalificatieduel staat 14-5 voor de man uit Oviedo, met alleen nog de race in Abu Dhabi te gaan. "Jenson is een geweldige coureur. Dat heb ik vorig jaar gemerkt. Dit jaar heb ik hem vaak verslagen, dus ik vind dat ik dit jaar volgens een hoge standaard gepresteerd heb."

Na een matig 2015, waarin Alonso en Button slechts 27 punten scoorden, gaat het dit seizoen al een stuk beter bij McLaren. Met 75 punten staat het team voorlopig zesde in de stand bij de constructeurs. "Ik ben blij met de dingen die we gedaan hebben en met de progressie van het team. Deze slotrace in Abu Dhabi heeft een heel andere smaak dan die van twaalf maanden geleden, toen we erg teleurgesteld waren en er veel dingen speelden in onze hoofden. Nu is iedereen optimistisch. We zijn nog ver van een kampioenschap af, maar we zijn een stuk blijer dan vorig jaar."

Er valt nauwelijks wat te vergelijken, en zeker vorig-jaar niet.. geloof niet dat er veel normale ,pechvrije, race-weekenden geweest zijn...
