Force India sluit beste seizoen ooit af met dubbele puntenfinish

Dankzij een zevende plaats van Nico Hülkenberg en een achtste plaats van Sergio Perez heeft Force India haar beste seizoen ooit afgesloten als vierde team in het kampioenschap. Rivaal Williams had nog een theoretische kans op de vierde plaats, maar die hoop was al snel vervlogen nadat Valtteri Bottas uitviel. Nico Hülkenberg en Sergio Perez zijn blij met de prestaties van hun team.

Nico Hülkenberg kende naar eigen zeggen een eenzame en eenvoudige race, al zag hij Max Verstappen in de eerste ronde zijn band nog wel tegen de sidepod van de VMJ09: "In de eerste bocht na de start zag ik opeens een band van Max Verstappen tegen mijn sidepod. Ik kon gelukkig door, maar had wel schade aan de vloer. De snelheid was daarna nog steeds goed, al kon ik de coureurs voor mij niet bij houden. Het is mijn laatste race voor dit team: bij Force India ben ik volwassen geworden en ik zal de mooie tijd nooit vergeten."

Sergio Perez finishte op een achtste plaats, maar betaalde aan het einde van de race nog bijna de rekening voor het willen bijhouden van zijn teamgenoot Hülkenberg. Doordat de banden van Perez versleten waren moest de Mexicaan zich in de slotfase richten op het achter zich houden van de snellere Felipe Massa. Perez is desondanks tevreden: "Ik heb iets teveel gepusht in een poging om de zevende plaats van mijn teamgenoot af te pakken. Ik wilde graag in het kielzog van Nico Hülkenberg blijven, daardoor sleten mijn banden te snel. Aan het einde moest ik hem laten gaan en moest ik zorgen dat Felipe Massa me niet te grazen kon nemen. Dit was een fantastisch seizoen voor het team! Ik ga nu genieten van een vakantie in Mexico en ben blij dat ik mijn vrienden en familie weer ga zien. Jullie zien me terug in 2017."
