Wenen vanavond het decor voor prijzengala FIA

De autosportwereld verzamelt zich vanavond voor een laatste keer in 2016 voor het prijzengala van de internationale autosportbond FIA. De federatie huldigt alle kampioenen en reikt de prijzen van het afgelopen jaar uit. Plaats van handeling is het Imperial Hofburg Palace in Wenen.

Mercedes-coureur Nico Rosberg krijgt daar de trofee voor zijn wereldtitel in de Formule 1 overhandigd. Daarnaast zullen ook de kampioenen uit onder meer het WEC, het WTCC, het WRC en de WRX op het toneel verschijnen. De FIA zal het evenement van 18.00 uur tot 18.30 live uitzenden via Facebook.

Max Verstappen is eveneens van de partij in Wenen. De jonge Nederlander maakt kans op twee awards. Hij is genomineerd voor de publieksprijs 'Action of the Year' en in de categorie 'Personality of the Year', waarin autosportjournalisten de winnaar bepalen.

Verstappen won beide awards al eerder. De Red Bull Racing-coureur mocht zowel in 2014 als in 2015 naar huis met de award voor Action of the Year, terwijl hij vorig jaar ook verkozen werd tot Personality of the Year.

De rijderscommissie van de FIA roept tevens een 'Rookie of the Year' uit. Die prijs ging vorig jaar ook al naar Verstappen na diens uitstekende debuutseizoen in de Formule 1. Deze award gaat nu uiteraard aan zijn neus voorbij, want de Nederlander is geen rookie meer.

    Officieel ben je pas wereldkampioen als je daadwerkelijk je trofee hebt opgehaald. Om te voorkomen dat er geen prijs te geven is zoals bij Jochen Rindt in 1970 die postuum wereldkampioen werd. Als Lewis echt alles wilt geven om alsnog wereldkampioen te zijn dan zou hij nog iets kunnen doen. Niet dat ik hem er voor aanzie:)
