Autoweek Rising Star Award voor Verstappen

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen heeft weer een onderscheiding in de wacht gesleept. Het blad Autoweek heeft de jonge Nederlander de 'Rising Star Award' toegekend. Verstappen is sinds zijn zege in Spanje dit jaar de jongste racewinnaar in de Formule 1 aller tijden.

Op weg naar een vijfde plek in het kampioenschap wierp hij zich op als luis in de pels van de gevestigde orde. Verstappen zegt daarover: "Het is nooit mijn doel geweest om op welke manier dan ook controversieel te zijn. Ik race op de manier die ik het beste acht, meer niet. Natuurlijk knok ik voor posities, of het nou aanvallend of verdedigend is. Dat is hoe ik ben. Maar het is nooit de insteek geweest om de meest besproken coureur van de grid te zijn."

"Ik race zoals ik altijd heb geracet. Ik heb geen idee of het juist ouderwets is wat ik doe of dat het iets van de nieuwe generatie is. Het is gewoon wie ik ben en niet iets dat ik door de jaren heen gekopieerd heb van iemand anders. Dit ben ik."

Eerder deze maand nam Verstappen bij het prijzengala van de internationale autosportbond FIA al twee awards in ontvangst, die voor 'Action of the Year' en die voor 'Personality of the Year'.
